Holiday ideas near Spa please!!

Chaps,

I am taking my lady to Spa for the track days on 30 and 31 May (lucky her). We fancy staying on for a couple of nights after that. Where shall we go? Are there any nice towns/villages in the area? I notice that the Ring isn't open on 1 and 2 June so that's out!!!

Any suggestions welcome.

I think there are plenty of war museums about if that's your thing, prob not best day out for the
lady though.

Depends what you like... Trier is a nice place to visit, Cologne isn't that far away, the Battle of the Bulge was fairly close, you could go to Luxembourg for a day trip, you could go to Bruges or Ghent of the way home...

northern italian lakes are only a 5 hour blat away....

johnny.....what about going into the Champagne region of France ?? Should be a couple of hours drive or so I guess, plenty of nice chateaus to stay at and should be some nice stuff to drink too !

Thanks lads. Northern Italy may be a bit far because we only have 2 days total, so I need to mnimise travel time. I am sailing back from Amsterdam to Newcastle on the Saturday early evening, so somewhere in the Benelux area may be best.

If you've not been before then Bruges is a great place for the ladies. Lots of shops chocolate makers, good food, nice hotels, character, charm, canal tours and last but not least a bloody fantastic brewery where you can sample the brew and have a nice meal as well. All that's missing is a race track, although Zolder is not that far away.

Ah mate, but for reasons stated in my first post, I can't go there....it's not open!

" You must do the Thermes at Spa. On the hill and superb natural waters. Loads of treatments to be had and amazing views from the sauna. Also just north of Maastricht is a big designer Factory outlet with Versace etc. "

2 junctions before Born turn left onto Brussel's Motorway and off 2nd junction. It is called Maasmechelen My car gets serviced at Speedservice there so it comes in handy when the car is being checked over after the track!

Try De Haan near Zeebrugge it is a really nice for lunch and a walk on the beach.

We checked out Maasmechelen last year on the way down to Spa (the wife found it on the internet ) very disappointing if you go there thinking it's going to be Bicester Village. Wouldn't go there again.

The Thermes at Spa is a good choice, just remember to book, they get booked up weeks before hand. Make sure you are staying in the Radission Palace Hotel which is attached to the Spa via a funicular railway. Your hotel keycards give you access bypassing the queues

We stay in Stavelot, close to the circuit. Smaller than Spa itself and a few good bars and hotels.

Are you sure that the ring has nothing going on. Usually unlisted activities are rather interesting anyway if you get my meaning.

As suggested, Champagne area in France is nearby. We have done that trip before and intend doing it again after our Spa trackday this year. Have a good chateaux recommendation if you are interested. Then you can do the champagne house tours and tastings.

Definitely go to the Rotisserie Du Porche, a lovely teeny restaurant in Spa itself where you eat in the chaps garden or hallway! Gorgeous food and reasonably priced too.

I am afraid they have no insurance for the funicular so it is a Avis minibus taking you up to the Thermes.

Speedservice is worth a visit if you need any work on the car done.

Johnny, just got back from Brugge (lads long weekend beer sampling), nice place for sight seeing/walking,
Jeez can it rain there!, hope a break in the weather is a week away
