Having spent all my time on the mechanics for the last few years, I am starting to do some work (Read as- Spend some money!!) on the appearance.

Respray being done next week, but I know that once the paint is sorted, the wheels, which are okay, will look more in need of work.

I have the original 15 inch lattice wheels with body coloured centres, and I was wondering if anybody had refurbished them, and if they had how they had done it.

I had the lattices on my 280i refurbed and powder coated (in silver) last year.
The cost was £40 per wheel, and they were done in a couple of days, with excellent results.
Not a job I'd consider worth doing myself.

PS: that included them taking tyres off, putting back on, and re-balancing.

With body-coloured wheels, if the rims are OK, you can get good results respraying the centres.

Make sure you mask off the outer rim properly. If you overdo the paint you might need to rebalance them.

Oh - and paint them off the car, horizontally on the ground, don't move the wheel until the paint is dry.

Also, if spraying the centres, it can be a good idea to spray from the back of the wheel as well as the front of the wheel to ensure you get a decent paint thickness towards the back of the spokes.

So what the best way of removing the existing coating, and preparing the alloy for repainting. I suppose the other question is what paint to use. Alloy is a slippery surface for paint to get adhesion too!

Has anybody used powder coating?

I havent had mine done but have seen wheels that have been powder coated and they look great. The company that I went to said that they had trouble doing two colours though.
They removed tyres, acid dipped them, blasted them and them powder coated them.
Prices were £160 a set drive in and drive out the same day or cheaper if bare wheels were given to them.

Quite - so you don't remove the existing paint, just rub it down a bit to key it in. I also jetwashed the wheel to clean the crud off in between the spokes.

My car is a standard Ford colour so I just used spray cans.

I also used a 500W halogen lamp under the wheel to get the thing nice and warm after painting - to harden it off quick.

Hi. My mate is self employed wheel refurbisher. He can do owt from polished rims, cosmetic wheel respray to any colour and can even have the whole wheel look like carbon fibre or kevlar! Astounding look but obviously comes with a price tag! Painting services start from around £38 including minor rim repairs and depending on location, also does home visits. He is based in midlands.
