i see in the wanted ads someone is after a ECU for a Ford V6, stating that Ford no longer produce these. Is that right ? are there no aftermarket companies that produce them?

I'm not sure about the Ford units, but I believe from a LR forum that Land Rover don't produce the ECUs for the earlier V8 engines now - although there are companies that will offer a recon unit on an exchange basis - I see no reason for this not being the case with Ford V6s.

JSG - pleased you have clarified that. It doesnt seem that ECU failure is a common problem but always a worry if you hear certain parts are no longer available!

PS - will be up to another Berks meet when the car is back and its light enough that the country lanes can be used to get there

I think it was the 'David Batty' thread that knocked our ratings down, someone out there doesn't have a sense of humour. You know the sort, they complain to BBC's Watchdog programme when their Speed Six engine explodes.
