scary noise from engine bay, help please

I have a 2003 c2 with 24k on the clock, was just serviced last week.

Just got back from a trip and noticed a strange noise from engine area, started as a little rattle or churpy noise then went on to a bag of nails rattle noise.

Engine was running fine and very smooth at the time, no warning light, temp fine and oil level fine so cut off.

Good god, what no earth can it be. As i said was running fine all the way home and still running smooth when noise occured, did not miss a beat.

Switch the air con off....does the noise go away?????

Could be a dry bearing in the compressor.

not the air con switched that off. Noise is coming from the back of the engine, original thought it sounded external to the engine and in the area of the fan belt.

Not a loose anti roll bar?? This happened to me after a track day a few years back!!!
