Does anyone know any good freeware for taking screengrabs from an mpg file - just had a go by playing the file in media player but can't get it to work using the conventional print screen and paste method...

Get hold of VirtualDUB (Google it, it's free) and then just pause the action and hit the "Print screen" button on your keyboard then paste into your favourite paint package, cropping the bit you don't want.

Windows Movie Maker bundled with Xp has a snaphot feature, import movie , scan to desired frame and hit the little camera button underneath the preview screen.

Somewhere in Media Player is a setting that allows you to turn hardware acceleration on or off. Turn it fully off, this causes it to render to the screen, rather than to an image overlay. Printscreen works as usual then. Obviously turn it back on when you have finished.

Zad - this worked a treat! I might have a play with some of the other suggestions later but this really seems to do the trick. Cheers!
