Hi all,

I have wireless broadband set up at home with a Speedtouch router. I let someone who I know and is in range access my wireless router from their own laptop - I did actually give them access, so they could access their work WebMail.

Now, is there any way I can see what sites they are visiting, as I believe that they are not using it only for the purpose I granted them access for. I believe they may be visiting a few sites of an 'adult' nature. Rather then block it, I would like to see some sort of history. Is this possible?

Any pointers appreciated.

S.

Unless your router is way better than the standard consumer stuff you have no chance.

Your ISP will have records of which sites were visited (by your connection) - not sure if they'll supply them though.

How about using a packet sniffer instead?

maybe just use it to spy on all the DNS requests, quite do-able depending on how techie you're feeling.

Any suggestions on sites where I can download the packet sniffer and spy on the DNS requests?

ethereal.com

A packet sniffer is not the easiest thing in the world to use and you will need for your router to act as a hub, not as a switch.

You're looking to sniff packets with a destination port of 53 IIRC... The domain being looked up should be in those packets in plain text. In Etherial the magic words are 'dst port 53'. If it works for URL requests from your PC but no-one elses then you have the switch/hub problem mentioned by om......pia.

The other approach since you presumably know his WiFi credentials, is to find some way to sniff his wireless traffic directly (i.e. not via the router).

If you know them well enough to use your system, why not just ask them?

Or if its a nice sensible router like mine (Draytek), you turn on the syslog option, point it at your ip address, and run a syslog client!

Before you go too far down the packet sniffer route, it isn't a speedtouch 610, is it?

www.speedtouch.com/prod610.htm

Because that page suggests it supports syslogging....

This is the model of router I have:
www.speedtouch.com/prod716.htm

And I only have suspicions about what his browsing activity is. I just wanted to confirm it for myself before I approached him on the subject.
