Mobil 1 - is this the best for my new baby ( '97 993)
Discussion
I am due a 12k service for my new ’97 993 C2S – 47k miles and booked her in today for next month at a major independent. I am a long term fan of Mobil 1 in my cars so post review of the PCGB forum thread on this subject elected to go for 0-40w Mobil 1 which seems approved etc. I bought said oil ( 12ltr) last weekend so it's now ready and waiting.
Two questions:
1) Is Mobil 1 not an ideal oil for a 993. When I booked appointment today seemed this was being implied without being said – what views. I want the best for my baby.
2) On viscosity I went for 0-40 but was advised that 10-40 would be a better bet as 0-40 is so thin it may well show gasket leaks not previously seen. Is this so, is 10-40 the right grade. I have checked Porsche approved oils list this on the ‘approved’ oils and Mobil 110-40 and 5-40 are approved but only 10-40 I see is called Mobil Super - I have not seen latter i the usual outlets. I have no leaks now and keen to keep it that way. Am I good with 0-40, being paranoid, or should I put in something else?

The best is between Motul 8100 Ester E-Tech 0W-40 or Silkolene Pro S.
Motul is Porsche approved, not sure if Silkolene is but both are excellent oils and being Ester based, will protect an unused engine for 6 weeks. PAO based oils like Mobil 1 don't have the static properties of Ester oils and the oil will start draining off bores, cams etc as soon as you turn the engine off.

If you're not using your car very regularly, then I'd advise using 15-50 Mobil 1 rather than the 0-40 Mobil 1 - IME the 0-40 stuff, being very thin, dribbles down the bores if you leave the car for a week, resulting in a massive cloud of smoke on next startup. The 15-50 isn't as bad in this respect.
Also, if you leave the car for a few weeks, the 0-40 results in the tappet followers running dry and a very alarming noise on startup!!! Not a problem as long as you don't rev it, they fill up within a minute or so.

My 993tt was using Mobil 1 0-40 originally and I had no problems. Got it serviced using 15-50 and masses of smoke. Problem was a dodgy porsche oil filter. Changed that and a few start ups later no problem. Took a few starts to clear residual oil that bypassed the bad valve in teh oil filter (small one). This is quite a common problem, often diagnosed as a bad turbo
when in fact it costs 10 quid to fix with a new oil filter

Is this really a problem? Shouldn't you choose an oil based on the protection it gives when you're driving. I'd have thought a cloud of smoke at start up -- even a big one -- is pretty irrelevant isn't it?

Yes, I suppose so, but my take is that I'd rather have some oil left in the heads when starting it up rather than it all draining out of the top part of the engine. After all the protection when oil pressure is 5 bar is going to be good with either synthetic oil - it's the engine start where the vast majority of damage is caused.
I could be wrong but my experience is that the slightly thicker oil doesn't drain out of the top end as much. It's not a problem if you drive it every day though.
