My relatively new Dell pc came with a free 15 month McAfee security thingy. It seems OK, in that we're now three months in and the PC still works.

Every now and then the thing goes ping and up pops a window saying someone or some thing - an alien life form for all I know - has attempted to dock with one of my ports, of which I seem to have thousands.

I click "get more information" and my browser opens "Hackerwatch".

WTF is that about? The stats never change - there are ALWAYS 78 million reported possible hacker activities in the past 24 hours.

Anyone any clues? Or is it all one huge joke on the PC illiterate public?

Nope. The PC is, supposedly, clean. I run various freeware spy and trojan checkers, the McAfee security package and it's just the Hackerwatch site that baffles me. It always has 78m reported events.

I quote

"Event Tracking
Significant incidents recently reported to HackerWatch.org
24 Hours 78,541,667
7 Days 547,791,661
30 Days 2,356,379,550"

The numbers never change from day to day.

Odd.

If you click on the McAfee icon on the lower right of your screen, itll open up a screen called "security center".(yank spellings..)
Then click on "personal firewall plus" on the left of the new popped up miniscreen.
Then click "options" on the right side.
Another screen opens and youll see "alert settings".
Just follow the instructions for what alerts you want displayed and enable them.

Mines set up so it logs all attempted intrusions but only notifies you if a new application attempts connections or it dosent recognise the application.

hth.

78 million reported "hacking" incidents from people's own ISP DNS servers that happened to trip their cheesy firewall software

Cheers for that, but half a dozen cans is not helping me in expressing myself.

What I'm trying to say is that the data that Hackerwatch displays never seems to change. There have always been 78m or so reports in the past 24 hours.

It just seems a little odd.

It's always the same becuse it's a made up load of bollox. The numbers are hard coded in othe HTML page, so won't change dynamically (or at all, for that matter).
