As you can probably tell, I am a complete novice when it comes to engines!
What I need to know is which way the dipstick top should be?? I ask because on the one side of the dipstick shows the oil level to be way to high, but on the other side it shows the level just above ok!!!!
So, depending on which way I insert the dipstick, I can get 2 different readings!!! I dont know whether to top it up or drain some out!! has anyone elso found this!!

On page 31 of the remarkably accurate!! owners manual it clearly shows the dip stick with the looped handle towards the rocker cover, don't ask why i know this!
Can't see why you should get a different reading either way.
Hope this helps

I also get a diff reading, I think the cause is simply that as the dipstick is bowed, as it goes in, the back side (the bowed out side) touches the side of the chute all the way down, as such oil smears up the back of it, the front side, with the markings on (assuming inserted the right way.. markings facing to engine) will give the accurate read.

Thanks

Thanks guys, I know how darn stupid my question seems, and I do know how to check oil! However, after trying the oil dipstick both ways, I do get differing readings, depending on which way I insert the stick! I too checked my manual, and you're right about the hook position.
because of my stupidity, I think I have over filled the engine because of having the dipstick in the wrong way!!!

It should not be too much of a problem as the engine will burn off the extra pretty soon. 500-1500 mls litre is normal (depending on 400/450/500 and how heavy your foot is !)

Having tooked at you profile where do you get fuel at 50p/l ? It would be worth a quick trip to Glous to fill up !

Thanks Bob,
I feel a little better knowing I havent caused any damage!!
I can take off and clean the stepper motor (thanks to Steve Heath's excellent book), but I can't put the oil dipstick in the right way!!!
50p a mile!! is that what I've put! lol. I think my better half would dispute that after looking at out bank statements, showing all the times I've filled the Chim up!!
