After many conversations regarding the benefits of having the spare in the boot, and the fact that I don't need the extra space nomally (until Le Mans!) I decided to re-fit it over lunchtime.

Christ, it's not as easy as it should be, lining up the bolt with the mounting point (in a dark garage) is bad enough, then after fitting it I realised that I couldn't get the cover on, as there was no gap between the upper of the boot and the tyre, so I had to remove the wheel and start again with the cover pre-mounted.

Guess it shows my spare has the right pressure though, any more and it wouldn't fit at all!

I took my spare out to see how much more room it gave... only to curse my decision as it's not easy to get it back... then I found out the cover thing.

Cover has now been modified to fit...

i never had a cover for mine. With the spare in the boot and the roof in the boot (as is normal) I can't fit any more than a jumper in there - I ditched the spare as I can at least put something of a fair size next to the roof then. Besides, i cant fit me golf clubs in if the spare is in place

Got a Pisonheads guiness coloured fleece with added exhaust smell in my boot Ideal for winter roof-off drives it is too.

As I can't and don't play golf, and the wheel used up space in my (still not sorted out) garage, it seemed better placed there for now, can't wait for my first puncture repair, using the jack, and the spanner that appears to have worn away it's hex, since it's almost circular - you can guarantee it'll happen when it's raining and I'm on a motorway or dual-carriageway..

Since the spare is in perfect condition, I guess the previous owners always went to the AA or tyre-weld option, I think I may just follow on with that thinking, unless a wheel gets broken that is.

Only good thing is that I've manged to brace my fire extinguisher behind it so it no longer flies around during expressive drives!

The previous owner of our car came up with an alternative location for the space-saving spare - on the rear parcel shelf behind the seats. It's bolted through the body (Vixen style) and comfortably sits centrally behind the seats. We can take the spare, have a bootful of luggage and/or the roof off at the same time Just make sure when you're fitting the locating bolt through the body you don't go anywhere near the fuel tank .......
