Hi
Just failed my MOT on emissions and a poor handbrake. DAM!

Handbrake readings are 60/60 and I understand they should be about 150. Anyone have any ideas how to improve their efficiency? I roughed them up a few months ago!

The emissions were 1.054 lambra at fast idle test and 1.073 on second fast idle test. The limit is 1.03. At natural idle test they were 0.8% CO which was acceptable. Other CO & HC readings were within limits. The car (4.2) has cats fitted but a sports rear exhaust with silencers.
Is this adjustable, and if so, how? I have the diagonistic software.

Hiya,

Did you take it to somone whom has experience of Cerberas ?
Only reason i say is because Cerberas are very MOT unfriendly, the Hndbrakes on some cars are rubbish no matter what you do to them and as for the emissions...

If you didnt already, i suggest taking it to somone who may just be looking in a different direction when certain things turn up.... hehehe , although i hear with the new testing regulations thats not easy.

I agree. Try Ian at Middlewich (which is not too far from Shropshire). Ian is a former TVR main agent man and runs an MOT centre. I find my h/brake works better if I get rid of dust which builds up around the shoes (the car's not your own)..

Hang on a sec
the upper limit is 1.03 yes? and you were 1.054 so you are in fact running leaner than specified, if the CO and HC are within limits you should pass, as these are the more important ones.

If he sticks to his guns then could always try re-setting the learned values in the ECU and make sure that both the air and coolant temp sensors are working OK. You could also add fuel by bunging in a 5K pot in the wirign from the coolant sensor and making the ECU think the engine is cooler than it really is and so adding fuel.

As for the handbrake you could try winding things up on the cable adjuster just in front of the diff, it still won't be great tho'

With the handbrake aren't there some little adjusters inside the drum at the centre of the disc?

There should be a little hole somewhere in the disc. You need to remove the wheel.

Have a look at this:

Towards the end of the thread.

Cheers

Hopefully the handbrake issue is sorted! I have cleaned up the shoes and roughed them up with a file. The inner surface of the disc's have been skimmed on the lathe and all finally adjusted up. Seems much better now...just got to see if the MOT man agrees.

Gone through the set-up on the computer tonight and can't find any sensor problems or tning issues. I have however notices a possible misfire and I guess that will cause problems with the emissions???? I will investigate further. Will keep you posted. Thanks for your help.

The best advice has already been given...Cerbs will always struggle with emissions. You may find you have the same problem unless you take it to a TVR friendly station.

You could argue a misfire either way regarding emissions i think...i am sure an expert will be along soon to say either way!

Straight from the Mot Emission handbook.

All Cerbera's 4.2/4.5
Min oil temp 85c
Max CO @ Idle 0.5
Min Rpm idle 900
Max Rpm idle 1000

Max CO Fast idle 0.3
Max HC Fast idle 200
Min Lambda Fast idle 0.9
Max Lambda Fast idle 1.2
Min Rpm Fast Idle 2500
Max Rpm Fast idle 3000

Try to get the Emission's Done first if the motor is Hot.

The Kerb weight which we go by 1240Kg 2730Lb
If you have a lightweight version let the tester know before testing.

The place I use won`t test the rear brakes using their rollers if the car has an lsd, so the Cerb, both Alfas and the Toyota are all tested using a "ball in a bucket" type device that sits on the passenger floor.... all very agricultural and Cerb friendly !!

I know ther was a lot of debate about the emissions, car got rather warm in teh process which probably helped matters !

Unless you go to a 'TVR friendly garage' your mostly wasting your time. The garage I went to (cos it was reasonably close) faffed around trying to read/stabilise the emissions for over 15 minutes. The rear of the car actually started smoking becuase they revved the engine for so long. Turned out the smoke was their sensor thing melting in the exhaust and he had to buy a new one - still didn't pass though!

Another thing to try would to reset both throttle pots - if they are out this could give un-predictable results (good specialist)

Another thing - I always change my oil & filter the day of the test.

It really helps.

Oh God it passed !

Had to take mine in today.

Original reading for CO was 0.7. The tester told me to go out and get her warm. Did so and came back with 0.3.

The Lambda was 1.8 at first but after a loooong wait and a microscopic partial throttle she hit 1.029 at which point he took the reading.

Thank you God, for generous testers !

Don't any of you guys find that when you are holding the car at 2000rpm the exhaust is popping like mad. If the exhaust is popping it can't possibly pass as thats simply unburnt fuel going into the exhaust.

I would if having the car in gear and loading the car slightly against the clutch would help for the 10secs or so it takes them to do the reading?

Mine only pops on overrun - I thought that's what they all did ?

I thought that they were measuring CO2 emmissions? Surely the unburnt fuel would give a better reading? - or when it bangs is it actually being burnt thus producing more CO2. Anyway take it to a TVR friendly garage and they.ll probably wink at you when the emmissions test passes ok - not sure why!

VOSA.

It's going to be a different ball game when the Emission's are linked straight to VOSA.

Still in the pipe line but it's gonna happen.
