993 Sports Exhaust ; what to buy??

Hi Guys, I'm considering a Sports Exhaust for my 993, i'd be interested in what you think are the best options (pros,cons etc) and best the value source. I've never been in a car with one fitted (they're pretty thin on the ground in Shropshire, its mostly tractors!) but the standard exhaust just seems a little tame. Cheers.

A lot of people are happy with the RSR exhausts, they are very good value for money. They are basically the standard exhaust cut open with some baffles removed, and re-welded up. Much more bass and rumble.
An alternative, which I have on mine, are the Cargraphic back boxes. These are more expensive but very well made stainless steel. The sound is totally different, not as much rumbly TVR-style bass as the RSRs, more a hollow vicious rasp, turning into a howl at high revs. I really like them!
Also remember that 993 exhausts are two-piece - the back box itself and the exhaust tips. You can go 'stealth' and put a lairy back box with standard tips, or you can pay extra and get all sorts of crazy tips (check out Cargraphic again for some silliness). I went for subtle-ish big ovals in the end, the multi-pipes look silly IMO.

Cyberface's description of the differences between the two is spot on, so it depends on your preference. I like the RSR sound but I would have no qualms about going back to the Cargraphics. Where are you in Shropshire? I'm in Powys, so if you wanted a listen (to the RSRs) we could meet. Happy to let you try the Cargraphics if you are intertested (may even be for sale

I've just ordered my third set of RSR's - they're great!
Everyone i know who has tried them has been happy with them, except Johnny Senna who was concerned about noise levels for trackdays (but then he's in an RS anyway!).
I have fitted several now (not just my own cars but other people's too) and it's easy to do with basic tools in about an hour. They sounds glorious!
The standard 993 silencers are made of a good quality stainless steel anyway (as you'll see if you try polishing them) so the RSR's have longevity on their side too, and DO NOT resonate. I have tried a couple of other systems and wasn't happy because of resonance at motorway cruising speeds.
I'd suggest you see if someone local to you has a set of RSR's and meet up with them for a run round the block. Alternatively get a set and try them, because if you're not happy you can return them within 3 weeks and all you have to pay for is postage!

After reading a post some time ago on this subject i decided to do a diy RSR on a pair of second hand boxes, keeping my originals just in case my mods went horribly wrong. The proceedure is so simple, cut around the weld at the end where the inlet and outlet pipes are, pull apart remove all the insulation and cut the pipes inside leaving two 100mm stubs, reweld it back together and hey presto home made RSRs. My 993 now sounds just perfect to my ears anyway, not loud just a bit deeper in tone and a little crackle on the overrun. Knowing what i know now i would mod my original boxes but would advise anyone to buy a second hand set roughly £50 to £100 on ebay and just have a go, trust me (im a doctor) you cannot go wrong, well IMO anyway.
Hi guys, Thank you for a great response. There seems to be a choice of 2. I'd be very interested to hear the RSR system, although the Cargraphic tones sound more what i'm looking for. +1 on making your own and saving hundreds.The 'RSR' exhausts that everyone raves about are merely a pair of secondhand boxes with the stuffing removed and a bit of pipe shortened as he says above. The guy making them must be laughing!
I also made my own, well I got them made for me locally as I can't personally weld/fabricate.
I bought a pair of used but great condition muffler boxes on eBay for around £100 I think it was, and got a bypass pipe welded in by a local fabricators as per the below pic.
After they were made the fabricator scratched his head and said "erm is £60 ok?"...
I refitted them to the car also taking car of a few other things at the same time like fitting brand new heat shields etc as the old ones were looking past their best.
I fitted a pair of DesignTek big machined alloy exhaust tips at the same time just for the aesthetics as I wasn't keen on the little standard tips.
The car now sounds FANTASTIC if I do say so myself!
It's only fractionally louder inside the car, with absolutely zero drone or resonance, the induction noise from the motor sound air box and K&N is still louder than the exhaust when you boot it. At cruise it's really quiet inside, But outside it sounds really fruity with a proper burbling 'open pipes' sound and a blip of the throttle makes a real bark, plus lots of raw pops and crackles on the over run.
Couldn't be happier.
I then sold my old boxes for pretty much what I paid for the newer ones.
So there you go... Probably the best £60 I've spent.

at last got the sound from my 993 turbo that i have been looking for,firstly,i fitted a set of design tek stainless exhaust was not happy with the sound,i then modified my original exhaust to rsr standard,again fast improvement,but still not right,eventually i fitted a set of fabspeed bypass pipes and they sound first class.long road but got their.
