Well its been nearly two weeks now since i crashed the Giallo fly yellow one and the Insurance's Independant inspector when to see it today.

The outcome from his inspection doesnt look to good at the moment but may well change.

He values the 96 N Griffith FSH and 24K miles at 14-15K . well if he puts that in his final report i can say farewell to getting it Fixed.

I dont know where he gets his figures from but as usual They start low.

A slighty unhappy BB

How do they judge whether a car is write-off or not?

If think it works on the lines of:-
If the repair value exceeds the current TRADE value of the car then it's considered a RO.

HOPE it's not as bad as it seems BB. Keep your chin up mate; the light at the end of the tunnel isn't always a train coming towards you.

Ah, thanks.

So are you hoping for the Banana to be fixed or would you prefer a new one now it has 'history'?

I want it to be fixed, it was a low speed crash into a fence which did the damage as i bounced along it before going through.
If it had been high speed i would of gone straight through and less damage to the car would have been done.
So mechanically the car is very nearly no different.
But there is a lot of work needed to the body.
I also feel that there arent to many of these cars about and are too easily Righten Off and would like to get it back on the road.

Worst Case!

If the car does get written off, you could still buy it back from the insurance company for a faction of the cost and get it fixed youself, shop around for the best prices.

I would start looking for cars of a similar age and mileage for sale and get copies of the adverts to justify a more realistic price if need be in the future.
I did this when my 97R 4.0 Chim with 49K miles got written off in June, and got £18.5K from the insurer.

Try here:

www.tvr-webmart.co.uk/tvr_guide_price.html

For TVR Webmart's regsiter of real world TVR prices. It might just give you enough evidence to show that a Griff like your is worth more. The figure does sound low to me (even if I am prejudiced because of my own Griff!)

Definately start getting adverts etc to fight the value thing. Unless they come back and say they'll repair it of course. They will use the engineers value to justify how much they offer you for the car. You will need to argue that there is no possibility of replacing the car for that amount of money.

Once you have a realistic offer from them ask about purchasing the car back (it will be lowest class of right off so no real problem) and then get it fixed yourself. You should be able to make a small profit .

BB - Dig out any realy good photo's you have of the car. They can help prove it's pre-accident condition when/if it come to a fight over value.
You may want to search on here if anyone has pics of your car.

Good luck

If it's borderline write-off, this is currently being discussed here:

So as i am ready if it comes to a bit of a fight over the worth of my car i have been getting info/prices of some around the age of mine and mileage and have had some e-mails from Phers who have sold recently (thanks) with there prices/mileage etc.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone with any info on cars that are/have recently been sold could send me any info to my email sipow@ukonline.co.uk

My car is a 96 n with 24k so anything around that would be good.

TIA

I recon to replace the Banana you would be looking to start at 16500 upwards private, and anything up to 19000 from a dealer (not main dealer).

Not much help really but best of luck...

I'm sure your local TVR dealer will help on proces, and get his CAP guide out. Point out that it's a classic car, get your own quotes from a specialist body shop, and it will all be good evidence with which to argue your case.

BB,

I'm going through this at the moment. Insurance company have offered £25k for my Cerbera, I want £26.5k - which will cover all the repairs that need doing to my car.

I went onto Autotrader.com and got the adverts for all T REG Cerbera Speed Six's for sale at TVR main dealers (where mine came from). There were only 6 in the whole country and the mean price of the cars was £26.4k.

Have sent evidence to insurance company...fingers crossed they accept my arguement.

BB - Have you heard anything more about things yet?
Are they going to repair the car? How much have they offered?

Good luck !

You can do this but the only draw back is it will be recorded on HPI as "Accident recorded" once fixed and will seriously effect resale.
This from a bloke that said "If you ever decide to sell it let me know first yeah?" to me yesterday

I'm in the same boat with mine, I had a front end knock, which required according to the insurance approved repair place over 6K of repairs. As my wedge is only worth 7ish they wrote the car off, I bought the 'wreck' from them for 1500 quid, took a load of pictures to show the damage, no chassis damage, new front end, bumper etc. Got it repaired, colour changed / full repsray, new hood all for 3600 quid, went on holiday with the change. My feeling is that if anyone did a search and it came up written off I could show them the photos, underneath car etc etc and explain the situation, bear in mind its likely you'll be selling to an enthuasiast who should have a reasonable idea of whats the cars are about and so can hopefully understand whats happened.
I'd also make the point that the car having being rebuilt again is probably better built than it was the first time.
