Petrol, Fire, Danger... ???
Discussion
Oops.
I took my 944 2.5 engine to bits the other day so that I could replace some of the hoses on the vacuum system - air leak causing poor fuel mix & misfire.
So, as per the instructions, fuel lins off, not a drop spilt.. bonus. Fuel rail electrics out, now.. simple.. just pull fuel rail and injectors will come out.
No. Wouldn't budge.
So the only way to get the injectors out of th eintake manifold is to take themout one by one.. so had to take the fuel rail off the injectors. I knew this would spill a bit but when i did it I Pi$$ed petrol all ovre the engine block.
Took the manifold off and have replaced the pipes, my only concern now is that when i rebuild this all up, will the whole thing erupt into a fireball when i start up??!!
Petrol got spilt on Sunday, and i wont be starting the car til Fri/Sat.. will it have evaporated?
Any help
Cheers
Shouldn't be a problem, but if you are at all concerned get a little bit of diesel and a stiff brush, and once you have put the engine back together scrub the bits where you spilt petrol with a bit of diesel on the brush. Diesel will clean off the petrol residue but also leaves a waterproof coating on the block, and doesn't burn too easily. The only place the diesel will burn off is the exhaust manifold, if it does you will see a bit of white smoke (like on stunt planes at shows - that's diesel they spray into their exhausts).
Really dont worry, the flamable compounds in the petrol would have burnt off inside 10 minutes, and to be honest working on cars every day you get a bit blase about it, i've seen petrol spray on to very hot exhaust manifolds before from split fuel lines, and it just evaporates off, provided there is no spark, or flame its very hard to ignite.
Petrol won't usually ignite unless there is a spark or flame present. Its boiling point is below its flash point, so if you pour it on a hot exhaust it just evaporates. (Try that with oil or brake fluid and you will have a fire on your hands.) In any case, petrol evaporates quite quickly and as long as there are no pools of petrol sitting on the engine I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks all,
I mopped up all the pools as soon as it happened, so i'm hoping it'll be fine..
Extinguisher on hand just in case.

really, you dont need that. not unless youre planning on starting the engine within a hollywood movie.
relax, youd be really hard pressed to make it go woof
