1st Track day in my 996
Discussion
Hi all
I bought my 996 c2 cab tip in January and have since then driven it like an old woman being rather nervous of not knowing what its like when it all goes wrong.
To cure this I took it to an airfield day at Keevil and thought id give you a report.
First of all the RMS did NOT split, burst, explode and leave oil all over the floor
I did a few tentative laps with the tiptronic and found it all a bit confusing, it changed down too late and I got my corners all wrong and was overtaken by most cars on the track.
As i progressed during the day i discovered that it wasnt the car changing down too late but the fact that I was driving it wrong. I learnt that by trail braking into and round the corner to just before the apex and then changing down having given it longer for the revs to drop below 4500 the car was very happy to change down and get on the power out of the corners.
In a manual the tendancy is to get in the right gear slightly earlier. Once Id got over this things changed very significantly in that I started overtaking others and was carrying at least 10 - 15 more MPH into corners and coming out of them much quicker as well.
I then let my instructor have a go and if anyone thinks that a 911 996 tip cab is slow then please think again. We put a quarter of a lap on a turbo in two laps.
Talent it seems doesnt come with the car!!!
All in all the car was excellent on the track once Id got out of manual mode and started using the tiptronic box as it should be used Nothing broke except my pad wear sensors which were fried by the second lap of the day.
Hope this helps anyone in a tip / manual dilemma
