Found something dodgy ! Advice please!

So there I was, at last having decided to get my dusty tools out, and try to sort out this high revs misfire....
I have lifted the bonnet and firstly examined the coil (bear in mind that this is a Chimaera 4.0 HC serpentine engine).
As my knowledge just about stretches to Minis and Cortinas and I'm going a bit senile anyway, I take it slowly and methodically.
Okay, there is a LOOSE spade connecter to the positive side of the coil. That isn't going to help deliver massive smooth power.
I tighten it up.
BUT there is also what to my feeble old mind, appears to be a little condenser-type thingy next to the coil (like a little barrel), with it's wire hanging in fresh air !
So...hard question.
Where should that little black wire go to, or has it been deliberately disconnected. The end of the wire looks broken to me though, as if ripped off.
Radio supressor ?

On my car it's connected to the +ve terminal on the coil, along with a white wire from the loom. -ve terminal from the coil goes to two wires both coloured white with a black line. I would imagine it's a suppressor for radio interference as the only other possibility is a condenser which is only used on points based systems which is exactly wot you ain't got!
HI Graham, just tried calling you, I'm assuming you're running a hotwire setup...
...the standard connections to the coil are a pair of wires, one positive one negative that go to the amplifier module. The negative side also has a white/black wire that splits two ways, both going through little 6.8k Ohm resistors. One feeds the rev counter, the other goes to pin 39 of the ECU and tells the ECU that the engine is turning and there is a spark, so the ECU had better put some fuel in PDQ.
The other wire on the positive side connects to the ignition and is the power feed to the coil, anything else in there is non-standard.
Hope that helps, if I can be of any more assistance, give me a call.
Regards
Iain

Thanks for the call Iain - as explained, my poor little mobile cannot compete with BBW din,
while hurtling down country lanes looking for misfires.
Yes it is a hotwire.
My major fettling of the coil connection has either shifted the misfire up a couple of thousand revs, or now I really am hitting the limiter (but I don't think so).
As suggested by Iain I'm now going to run a search on fuel pressure, as well as 'misfire' (which brought up about ten pages
).

).Hi Graham,
I had exactly the same thing - swapped the coil for the one on my Disco and it dissapeared so new coil purchased and fitted and problem cured. I have had it happen previously where it has been the HT leads breaking down slightly so not able to give a fat enough spark, especially at higher revs where unless it's a new coil it may be struggling to give the ouptut needed anyway. Has the effect of a soft cut rev limiter. Of course it could be one of a hundred other things too !
