O/T dismantling a lap top PC?

This is way off topic I know but... seeing as there are a lot of IT types out there, does anyone know how to get the screen off an IBM ThinkPad? I've cracked the screen on mine and I have a spare that I want to swap the screen over with. Any ideas, or is there an IBM chat group forum (heaven forbid). Rich...

Every laptop I have stripped has usually been a pain in the hoop! However replacing the screen should be pretty straightforward. Try to see how it is attatched, sometimes the hinges can be accessible without stipping the entire machine.

Also you can usually pop the keyboard out without much trouble, try that and see how it is all fixed togther.

I think what I'm trying to say is that these things are pretty simple, you might have to take a lot of screw out to get it off and be carefull with crap ribbon connectors. Just take your time and count the scres (a prixe if you can rebuild it with 20 screws left and it still works).

Ive just done the same on an old Pico laptop. The back light went and I opened it up just to see if there was anything obvious. Was just a matter of dismantling step by step, a few small screws and a couple of multi pin plugs. I dont have a spare screen yet but it'd only be a 30 min job once I find one.

If they're the same model, wouldn't it be easier to swap the hard disks rather than the screens and instead use the 'spare' pc?

Ah well, the thing is that the buggered one with the good screen has a French keyboard which I don't want the hassle of, com ci my old mange tout? Rich...

If they're exactly the same model laptop then it may be easier to swap the english keyboard and hard drive from the knackered one to the good one

If not you may find that you have to slide off hinge covers or flip up bits of plastic to get it apart. You'll figure it out with a bit of headscratching/swearing.

Sorry to Hijack the thread but..

I've got a Dell laptop with a dodgy power lead plug. I'm sure it just needs resoldering onto the board but can I strip it down, can I buggery.

Took all the screws out that I can see but its still firmly held together.

Any ideas?

the thinkpads screen screws are in the hinge assembly at the bottom but you will still need to remove the keyboard and the upper plate to get the video cable out. it is MUCH easier to change the drive and the keyboard. The keyboard is only connected via a ribbon cable and the disk is underneath it. as you'd have to do 90% of this job to even start on the screen (and its a bitch to do and you can easily wreck the video cable taking out the screen)I'd just swap the driv and keyb.
