If today has tought me anything, it's that you can't live with the AS Holley throttle body spring. You get a Blip-Blip operating the body by hand, but not such a sharp response using the pedal.

There are obvious fixation points for an additional return spring on arm and cable stop mount, do people think that this will be sufficient and will this get me blippin'?

am I right in thinking that it's not always a good idea to overspring a carb - can cause premature wear of carb throtle bushes ? Is it better to add more spring to the pedal ?

Can you do a vid with some proper noise ?

Yeah I've seen others do the pedal thing - think I may do a combo of the two.

I set the ignition to 3000 rpm max. Didn't want a 550 bhp engine fying away!!

There will be noise, and lots of it. All in good time.......

Thanks for the advice.

Just thinking about it, what is the difference between applying the tension to carb or pedal? Don't they both pull on the throttle spindle bearings?

The difference is that your problem relates to moving several metres of cable. The springs on the pedal pull the cable back where the springs on the carb/T'body are trying to push the cable and at the same time applying a side load to the spindle.

Luckyp - do you have the Teflon throttle cable, when I fitted mine as well as curing sticky throttle problems it was a lot smother and allowed a Blip-Blip using the pedal and meant I did not need a stronger spring?

Steve - logic as always. You know you should charge for this info........just remember, I suggeted it so, I get my info for free!!

Chewy - Tis a cable suppled in Jan from the fac. Doesn't stick, just want the confidence of a stronger return

I appreciate it was factory supplied - my original one was. I believe the factory can now supply the Teflon cables but don’t know if they are standard. It might be worth checking whether yours is one of the newer ones. If not I am sure the Teflon will go some way to improving confidence and quicker return. The Teflon cable slides much more freely. I never thought mine was a problem and added an extra return spring - it was only when it stuck on at 4000rpm approaching a T junction that I became concerned (This was after a good thrashing when engine bay was very hot).

I use this setup:

Works perfectly, pulls in the right plane, and provides the reassurance of having two springs.

Paul,

Do you know where you can get a dual spring set up like that in the UK? Will it fit the Holley Amerspeed set up?

Mine is an 800CFM Edelbrock carbed AS engine, and that part fitted fine with a bit of fettling, so I should imagine it would fit fine on a Holley carbed AS engine. It basically bolts to one of the carb mounting studs, so you need to make sure that the stud has enough spare threads. I think I ended up fitting a slightly longer stud.

Think I got mine from Real Steel.

Ta Paul,

Did my first 20 yards down the drive today. Selected reverse and just balancing on tickover let the clutch out. She gently rolled backwards without event.

Feeling a little braver, I stuck her in first, and thought that I'd give her a little blip. Whoops!!! I slithered for about 5 yards and gave myself a shower of gravel!!!

Jeez this ain't no Lambo or Fezza, it's mentally raw!!!

Back to boring door fettling tomorrow.
