What's better than a 205 GTi for around £1000?

It needs to be able to be parked on the road and will only be unsed at weekends for a bit of fun, but should be able to cope with motorways when asked to.

The S1 106 Rallye almost fits my critera too. Any better?

309 GTi ? Buy an half decent one for less than a £1000
and leave some spare for a couple of tweeks.
Pound for pound you'll get a better 309 than 205.

You will have problems finding a good one though. Nippy, fun, mid engined and IMHO looks great.

Getting a good one is the problem though. I must have looked at about two dozen before I ended up getting a 1.9 205 Gti.

They were either rusting like mad and in generally terrible condition, or horribly over priced. Or both...

I might be looking for one to replace my tank later in the year, so Im hoping for a bit more luck this time!

Try a Renault 19 16v.

Lot of car for very little money, just can cost a lot if they go wrong.

Handle very well and a little different

mk 2 golf GTi 8 valve?

Can pick up a good one for about a grand, a bit less if its a bit tatty. The engines will go for ages, apparently the 8 valve is less fragile than the 16 valve so they withstand the thrashing a lot better.

An interesting and iconic car, but is it "Better"?

Admittedly Im biased here as Ive got a serious soft spot for 1.9 GTis - even if the maintenance does require a walletectomy.

1. A blinding 33 cloverleaf
2. Possibly a 147 2.0
3. A 2.0 155 (probably M or N reg though)
4. A 164 3.0 (bit more barge than you want though ?)

If you've ever fancied trying 'The Ferrari Experience'
then I would recommend a Fiat X1/9 as the closest you'll get for £1000.
Rust & hot starting problems come as standard, just like the real thing!
(Plus it's got the same door handles, and boot release catches as a 308GT4)

I can't afford for it to cost me too much to run it. I fully expect a few hunderd quid twice a year, but don't want to be lumbered with major engine problems.

I'm presuming the golf should in theory be more reliable at the 100k mile mark than the Peugeot, but I've never been a fan of the image.

I've looked into learning to ride a bike as supercar perfomance for that money is obviously appealing, but I can't afford the insurance.

Fiat eh?? Not convinced, but I'll have a look at what google throws up when I do a search and educate myself a little more.
