Email the european/German group?

sorry Stu, couldn't resist.

Seriously, got back to the shop/dealer where you bought it and ask for the original hologrammed discs.

Just means it's been installed using a dodgy key, have you got a shiny sticker on the side of your box that's got an XP product key on it? This should be the first question...

Seriously, a genuine copy of XP pro or Home edition isn't really that expensive.

System restore - turn off windows update. Use third party software to patch security holes.

It's not the forty eight English pounds Richard, the principle , it's the principle. I feel violated, duped, abused, raped, hoodwinked, conned, missled... get the picture

What were you running before it blew up? If you had a legit copy then, you should have had the OEM key on a sticker, and the installation media. On the other hand if you took the opportunity to get a 'free' upgrade to a newer OS which you don't have a licence for, count yourself lucky that you've got away with using stolen software for so long and go get a legal version now.

The last windows update was the XP authentication software (as you have now learnt, it is always good to check what Bill Gates is trying to put on your machine) so you should be fairly up to date as long as your restore point isn't too far back. Make sure you have the usual spyware blockers (Spyware blaster et al.), firewall etc. and anti virus suite and use various bits from www.sysinternals.com/SecurityUtilities.html to keep an eye on your system.

Ok so looks like it's a trip down PC bleedin World Stamping down on counterfiet software

So installing a legit copy, will this effect any stuff on there, files etc?

I would just like to say that apart from the odd time of touching 78mph on the Queens highways, I'm an extremely law obiding citizen and I'm no way would want anyone to be effected and hoodwinked in the same way I have been. I just hope we can all learn from this experience and others are more fortunate than myself.

I'm sure microsoft are swopping copied discs for real ones at the moment(can't find a link though) to try to eliminate this. Probably not much help as you wont have the disc.

Really surprised no-one has suggested linux

Mostly because we've read Shady's "what does the On button do again" computer related threads

Shady, if it was a genuine cockup, and you have your proper XP key stuck on the side of the box, the following helpful link might help...
