I rode to work in the rain this morning and now my crotch is soggy. I was wearing my “waterproof” fabric trousers (the type with all the armour in) and they have not leaked before.

Does the material degrade over time and lose its waterproof properties and is there any way of re-waterproofing them.

All of the waterproof clothing I have ever used has eventually started to leak. Generally, the more expensive clothing has lasted longer, but it’s not always the case. (I have also bought a fair amount of “guaranteed waterproof” clothing, both cheap and expensive, that has leaked like a sieve from day 1).

You can extend the waterproof life of fabric clothing by using Thompsons Water Seal or Fabsil on it.

Thank you, that’s the sort of thing want.

Is that the sort of thing I could buy from my local bike shop? Any idea of the price?

I bought some expensive Rukka gear 4 years ago: brilliant until last year (e.g. 12 hours in torrential rain, London-Germany, no problem.)

I have recently re-proofed them using a Nikwax system- wash in the first solution, spray the 2nd all over and allow to dry (<£10 from Hein Gericke). I haven't had a chance to try them yet but, at the same time, I did a light windcheater-type jacket which would start seeping after a couple of minutes & that survived a downpour over the last few days with no obvious leaks. Maybe worth a try for a tenner?

Get Thompsons Water Seal from any DIY shop. Works just as well on a Chimaera hood.

Thompsons you get from the DIY type shops (B&Q, Focus, Homebase etc.). Fabsil can be obtained from the camping suppliers like Millets. Fabsil tends to be a little more expensive but is no better.
