This can't be right. I have an ADSL connection which I understand to be 1Mb download, 256Kb upload.

I'm currently uploading some video clips and Cute FTP tells me the speed is varying between 0.8 and 4.2Kb, which reminds me of my dial-up days. Do I grin an bear it or write to my MP?

Perhaps the FTP site is on dial-up?

Or, time how long it takes to send an email of one of the files - if thats much quicker, its an indication that your link is fine and its a problem at the other end.

Hosting by 123-reg. You have a point but the prospect of changing everything makes me shudder!

However, I'm getting this over and over again; will give up and try again later

COMMAND:> APPE AM full.wmv
STATUS:> Connecting data socket...
ERROR:> Failed to establish data socket
451 AM full.wmv: Append/Restart not permitted, try again.
ERROR:> Can't initiate data transfer

Are you using active FTP with the server expecting passive, or vice versa? Or got a firewall or somebody doing packet shaping at either end?

Do you also have any torrents running in the background?

Is this a 123-Reg virtual hosting account or a Dedi Server (the dedi servers are very highly contended due to the unlimited bandwidth they offer.)

Is anyone else sharing your link?

Is the speed so poor to any other sites you have?

All I know is that I'm doing exactly the same as I always do. Cute does say '227 Entering passive mode' in the list of stuff it throws up.

If you mean other downloads, no.

No idea! I thought bandwidth was an ISP thing?

Possibly all the neighbours on the ADSL loop!
[quote=JamieBeeston]Is the speed so poor to any other sites you have?

I noticed they were loading slowly yesterday.

Anyway, I've tried the upload again and so far it's up to 7% and running at 3.4Kb - exactly dial-up speed! So 70Mb is going to take quite a while...

Thanks for the help; sorry I'm too dumb to answer but at least it's working again, sort of.

The easiest way to think of it is like this.

You need bandwidth to upload, your ISP provides this.

The SERVER you are uploaing to ALSO needs Bandwidth to connect to the internet, IT's ISP provides this.

Rather than YOUR b/w being slow, it could be the SERVERS is..

If you're using XP it's be worth firing up Task Manager, go to the networking panel and view->Select Columes and add bytes/sent interval and recieved. That'll check if there's any other networking going on you didn't know about....

Nothing else happening in Task Manager. I think 123-reg need to go to PC World and buy another motherboard etc.

Ha, tried to send problem info to 123 but the form timed out. I'll wager it's ed.

Update at 1800 hours - for some reason it doesn't like 'resuming' despite the fact that it says I can. So I'm overwriting the partial file and currently it's running at about 30Kb. I told 123 to put some more coal on and obviously they have
