After an excruciating wait (2-3 months), I finally got a build date from BBS Motorsport and had a set of gold-centred alu wheels shipped out to me.

I must say with the cobalt blue body, the dull gold effect really goes well, despite earlier nagging doubts. Sorry, no idea how to host photos and post them here, but at some point I will update my profile pic. If you're wondering what they look like, do a search on BBS and you will find a particularly long thread from many months ago (about a group buy I think?).

Rather than unveil them a couple of times a month for track days, I decided to stick road rubber on these and keep them on permanently - they look too good to waste. My original GT3 wheels, despite being a touch heavier, will now become my track wheels with Cup tyres.

Would appreciate some thoughts on painting the originals for the track. I am mulling over the following (bear in mind it's a cobalt blue car, and the calipers are red):

1. Gloss black with a yellow stripe round the edge and yellow GT3 lettering. (Would match the interior colour combination: blue Schroth harnesses with yellow lettering on black seats - seems to go well. Problem is the calipers are red, and I can't justify repainting these yellow as well).
2. Gloss black with a red stripe round the edge and red GT3 lettering.
3. Cobalt blue with either yellow or red stripe and lettering.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Harris

Harris,

I'm really pleased for you. I too want aluminium BBS race wheels ASAP! I will post the pics for you, but I am off on hols this weekend so I might have to do it in a week or 2. Just post the pics to me if you like.

Don't know about painting the GT3 wheels. My personal preference may be for black spokes and keep the rims silver. Or yellow rims I guess.

Don't forget they are not road wheels and will not cope with being hammered on poor roads.

Potholes and manhole covers will destroy them.

Oh, and have you told your insurers as they are also not strictly legal for the road.

I use mine to and from the track and only when I can't be bothered to swap them back for odd trip into town. I avoid bad roads like the plague, although some users have used them long term. Obviously don't have roads like my local ones....

Tim,

I thought that only the BBS race wheels with magnesium centres are illegal for the road, but the new version with the aluminium centre is surely road legal?

AFAIK none of the motorsport series have whatever the necessary approval is, for road use

Johnny - many thanks for the offer. I will certainly send you a couple of pics during the course of the week.

Tim - I had assumed the alu centre wheels were TUV approved but the mags were not. Ah well, it doesn't affect me out here as (a) the local traffic dept will not pick up on approval or otherwise when reregistering the car (b) the roads are pretty smooth and (c) local insurers have no problems with this type of thing.

If you use them on the road they will shatter. Had a mate with a 993 turbo 4 GT2 bodykit and centre lock wheels. All four cracked their spokes within six months

I assume you mean magnesium alloy centres? These are aluminium alloy.

I am pretty sure Johnny is right on this. And if he isn't, I am not listening <fingers in ears, la la la la>.

Barry - try Erich Gissler at BBS Motorsport on +49 7836 521115. As a benchmark, I paid just under 4k Euros including air freight to Dubai for a set of 18" for a Mk2 GT3 - thanks to flamespitter's advice (Konrad), Erich provided a 25% discount against the full price. They are manufactured to order, so be sure to provide correct size and offsets. Also don't use the mags on the road whatever you do, and heed Tim's advice on TUV approval! As I say, for me, it wasn't an over-riding consideration, but in the UK it probably is.

BTW, many thanks to all those on the previous thread who helped me to source these (Konrad, Tim, Johnny S, John and others). I got there in the end...

Harris,

It's good to hear the wheels have arrived. They will look stunning on your car.IMO BBS race wheels (preferably gold centred) finish off a race bred 911 perfectly.
My abiding memory of GT race meets (including Le Mans pits) is of rows and rows of gleaming gold BBS wheels waiting for their turn....)

Tried to email you through PH but got bounced back - I guess because you are on hols. Never mind - I will update my profile pic instead.
