Sorry if this is a repost, but what is the deal with unmarked cars?

Isn't it all supposed to be about high visibility policing on our roads?
Unmarked cars used for policing road traffic, surely isn't/shouldn't be allowed!!

Won't it help identify & catch people who are willing to break the rules & drive dangerously thinking there is no-one there to catch them ?

I look at it this way...The unmarked cars are NOT mobile Gatsos, they're for catching complete muppets on the roads and sneaking up on real scrotes.

I do quite a few miles both privately and for work.

When on a motorway i rarely stick to the limit and the law of averages says i've been observed by or passed an unmarked car at some point..

Licence is clean and always has been. I must be doing something right.

In spite of vonhosen's protestations, there's no such thing as an unmarked car

Any tt can drive sensibly past a marked car, chances are they won't see the unmarled and carry on driving like a tt right past it. How many times have you been out and seen some real numpty behaviou? At least with an unmarked there's more chance of them being caught.
Yes it can also mean more chance of you being caught as well but at least there's a real person there and the chance of discretion and a ticking off - unlike the scameras!

There's clearly a mark on that Monaro's sideskirt, it's obviously not unmarked

I like to think that I can spot an unmarked car a mile away, they tend to be just as obvious as the full battenberg. But having seen Vonhosens piccy, i'm now not so sure

Until very recently, Derbyshire Police were using a red 1984 'A' reg Citroen BX

He hasn't said it's an unmarked plodcar. If it is then let's see a close up of the grille, fogs, front screen, rear window, the other side, how it's occupied and let's see a close up video clip of it being driven as per another car on the road would see.

He's just teasing you BG

Unmarked cars are a good thing, for reasons stated, but also as they stand out a mile to anyone who knows what to look for. Keep the faith BG

Another force had a clapped out Renault 5 in various shades of iron oxide but it still screamed 'plod'. They have to drive the thing, remember

you can tell its a plod car as they are the only people allowed to drive cars with the number plate blanked out! That's always a give-away!

However the plate IS another potential giveaway...

I didn't see it from some of the angles mentioned here.....I could only see them coming in use for covert opterations.
I guess it makes more sense when it comes to stupid driving, as opposed to just breaking the speed limit.

Thanks guys

We know what you mean TB, however I suspect that what you are saying amounts more to a condemnation of typical lousy driving standards by MoP.

Btw old exWD Standard Vanguard staff car in army green...... South Yorks many many moons ago. Probably been remelted down by now.

edited to add, an odd collection of pictures there vh.

v old home office manual and ancient roadcraft, I remember the one to the left of the Home office manual almost out of shot to the left but not the one in your pic.

Depressing to think of it that way but that's probably how it is.

Sure is, and that wm scamera page is interesting, reaction times and thinking distances is educational and fun (when you want to avoid work)

If a standard patrol car is a "Jam Sandwich" then an unmarked car is a "Bread and Butter Pudding".
Oddly it makes a GATSO(tm) the "Raping Post"!

it would still be easy to spot

it would be being driven properly (what ever that is) by one or two blokes looking like sales reps
