Gearbox clean up

I'm about to start cleaning my gearbox unit.
Is there any thing special I should use?
I was thinking about some gunk and a pressure washer, to clean the outside then paint it.
Are there any points I shouldn't get wet/cover up?
Is there a preferred paint? I guessing hi temp?
Silver or Black?
Is it worth lacquering, if so any preferred make?
How many coats?

If you are going to paint the gearbox, I would use an acid etch primer, most paints won't adhere to the inevitable oxidation that will be on the aluminium case.
