Homelink - How do you get it to work?

Having paid over £200 for this extra I should like to get it to work.
My car is a 2006 997S and I have tried to get it to "learn" my garage door opener a few times. I point it at the front of the car and hold my opener for about 45 seconds and the sidelights flash 3 times (like they should) but the roof button still fails to open the garage.
Has anyone else had problems and have you managed to solve it?
Does the Homelink act like a laser jammer? I shall definately be saving for one of these....
