Currently tempted by a Toppy, is it worth the extra over a Humax? Yes I may upgrade the HDD in future and fiddle with it (I'd really like the Toppy with wireless but its not here yet).

If you don't know what I'm talking about you can't help respond

Well, I know what you're talking about, but sadly, I have the same question.

Our Sony VCR packed up a couple of weeks ago, and when I went into John Lewis to buy another, they don't sell them any more ...

From the same thread on Digital Spy....

Toppy wins on transfer of recordings, padding of recordings, chase play & looks(black panther). All important to me.

Humax wins on fast forward/rewind speed 64x compared to 6x on the toppy(toppy has nice jump functions via TAP though). Humax GUI is nicer.

Is it only me or are you completely in the dark about what was just discussed there?

If that was at me, then yes.

er... I think...

I assume the question is regarding freeview PVRs and the differences between the Humax and the Topfield options, who between them seem to be leading the market in such devices at the moment.

I get my TV via NTL, so as such can't comment first hand as my options are somewhat limited, but I like to think I keep up with the market. The point of my post was that digital spy offers a serious level of in depth knowledge the sum total of which would seem to be "they both do what they do very well".

I've got the Humax 9200T and I love it.

Huge disk space. Excellent GUI and general ease of use.
Quiet, quick to start up and very rarely crashes. Software updates over the air.

good remote control based on Sony design, ie buttons in the same places.

can't comment on the Topfield obviously but the Humax is great

Blokey at work has just bought the Toppy - looks the nuts and he's really pleased with it so far. One of the things that sold it to him is that it allows you to load on third party mods and hacks to tweak the features and improve usability.

These are supposed to very good as well, dual tuner, only £99! And you can bung a 120gb drive in with no bother apparantly.

We have a Toppy and are generally very pleased with it, some of the earlier firmware had bugs but the current one is perfect. In certain circumstances yu can record two and watc a third programme simultaniously.

N problems with it

I've had the Humax 9200 for a few weeks now, and am very pleased with it. No experience of the Toppy, but for me the Humax does everything I need, is easy to use and reliable.

i have gone for a humax 9200t. they now do them at john lewis for only £199 as of very recently.

the GUIs are really good for what is in effect a cheaper make. the biggest problem if you search the net is the length of time it takes for the programme schedule thing to load up - mine takes no time at all so they must have mended the software...

the box takes maybe 20-30secs to initially boot up but that's fine.

for the money i really like it. i really like the retro 80s looks too. i wish i could have got it with a black case but hey-ho. very impressed so far. will have a go at downloadin gthis wknd and generally playing about with it. if you were going to go topfield i'd speak to derestrictor because he sells them!

Dixons/Currys have just started selling them in the high street for that price too.

I know - it's just that John Lewis are actually good! (it's their high street price too)

After all your great input it looks like I'm probably going to upgrade to Sky+ as it allows us to record stuff 'er indoors wants to watch too. Seems you can upgrade the HDD on them too

Except all the tutorials refer to a disk that is no longer in production.

I'm sure theres something out there that works though, just be sure its confirmed working and is available.
