Maser 3200 resource?
Discussion
I want to buy a 3200GT and have been looking for any info on the net - without much success. I've found 3200gt.com and the forum, but the're fairly empty...
So - can anyone suggest any good websites? Or,help with some of the questions below?
I've heard there were a number of changes made around 2001 to improve driveability - when exactly was this?
What are the major things to watch out for?
Can you recommend any good independent dealers for sales or service?
Auto or manual?
Any comments appreciated
Many thanks

"What are the major things to watch out for?"
A full structured inspection is best for any "exotic", performed either by yourself or a specialist, there are plenty of PPI checklists floating about the web for Ferrari's which can easily be adapted
Compression and leakdown test's should show up major engine faults (combined with checking emission's, oil pressure etc) Most of the annoying issues that seem to come up with these cars tend to be electrical.....and with the computerised doodads they make for interesting diagnosis (sometimes only possible to find and reset a fault with the correct diagnostic tool)
If your going for a manual make sure the clutch is in good condition and has plenty of life left in it.....your looking at around £1k for a new one (double that if you go to an official Maserati dealer)....the clutch plates seem to be on back order from the makers, I was quoted a 12 week lead time from my normal suppliers last week!
As for dealers, it all depends on where you are on the planet
decent specialists seem to be few and far between in the UK.....but cost wise far far better than an official dealer

a couple of things to check other than the obvious, make sure it has had the steering recall done to it and don't even consider one that does not have the red key.
As your in London, for your pre purchase inspection I would send it to Lancasters at Colchester. They are main dealers and will be able to read the diagnostic tools and tell you what has been logged in its history. Also if it has been serviced by ANY main maserati dealer they can access the Maserati records and see its service history with recorded mileage etc.
If you are adamment on useing a independant, Giallo at tunbridge wells, Foskers at brands hatch and Kent high permance at Maidstone all will look after it for you.
Personally I prefer to stay with Lancasters at Colchester as they give a 25% discount on cars of 5 plus years and will collect and deliver back to you foc. I think you will find that the price difference between main dealers and independants is not that great, and with the excellent service I get from Lancasters I am happier to send to them. After all they are hoping your maserati experience will be a good one and will buy your next masser from them at some point in the future.
The changes between 00 and 01 and later cars are small and mostly electrical mapping changes. Earlier ones are a bit more of a handful, especially in the wet.
edited because I couldn't remeber the rest of your question!
potential sources ADG sevenoaks, there's loads in top marques mag/website and always PH classifieds.
General info, try www.maserati-alfieri.co.uk,www.mas www.maserati.com, www.maseratilife.com and of course the maserti club UK. (they normally have a few in the classifieds also).

Guys,
Re the Steering recall and all other recalls for that matter - are Maser obliged to carry out work FOC? OR am I responsible for getting it done.
I know it sounds a silly question as all other cars I've owned had recalls and dealer took car of them under warranty.
I'm just wondering whether this still applies to a 6 yr old used motor?
Cheers,
BM

I spoke to Marenello when I bought mine last year and they offered to do the steering rack recall FOC. However having researched it I decided against having the work done. There were many posters on this site who were unhappy with their cars afterwards and the defect has affected only four cars out of a parc of 3000 odd. My car has been checked and the original rack mountings are fine.
BTW it went in the PH classifieds tonight.
