Disappointing Police Attitude
Discussion
I have just returned from visiting a friend of mine in the village who has an MGTF, MG BGT, Matchless and 1972 BMW R??. Last week he was driving across a double roundabout with friends on the BMW, glanced in his mirror to check whether the bike behind had followed him and in the split second looked back to see the car in front had had to stop suddenly due to a car pulling onto the roundabout without looking. He braked hard, clipped the rear of the car and was thrown forward trapping his leg between footpeg and cylinder breaking both lower bones and his wrist in two places when the bike came down on top of him.
He fully accepts it was his fault and hasn't made a habit of crashing in the MANY years he's been on the road.
Whilst in the Ambulance the Police Officer who attended told him that he could charge him with 'Driving Without Due Care And Attention', but said that he wouldn't if my mate attended a £189 course run by the police. He also suggested to him that as he's in his late 60s/early 70s he should give up riding.
If he wants to see people driving without due care and attention he wants to try standing outside my house when the Corsa/Paxo boys come past......

Always a tricky one, dealing with "mature" drivers when they have accidents. Sometimes there is a need to suggest they should consider whether they should still be riding/driving. On those occassons there is a need for considerable tact and diplomacy. Sounds like those attributes fell a little short on that occassion, but if the same rider has another accident in the near future there will be those who call for mandatory re-tests at age xx etc.... All of which has been the subject of previous threads.
