The stitching is starting to come undone on my hood around the top corner of the rear screen, anybody know who would be good to go and get it fixed by, I work in the marine trade and was considering going and using some guys who do boat covers, I was wondering if at the same time I could get a zip put in to open rear window with hood still on, any reason why I should not do this? just thought even on a changeable day I could get the best out of the exhaust note! I remember on an old spitfire I had it was quite good to drive around with the window in the back down

The marine boys should be able to do a great job on a TVR roof.

I'm not so sure about a zip: do you think the rear screen holds out that much noise?

Best coloured car you've got there, though!

I'd be interested to hear what you dig up on this. I had a new window stiched in last year and every time the roof goes down it gets creased no matter how carefully it is folded and I wonder how long it'll last. being able to unzip the window before folding would eliminate this and would probably get the roof down further too.

Sorry to ask, but who is Mark? I was thinking about contacting a local company called J.B. Yacht covers as he does a good job on the boats and is into his motors as well, I noticed there is another thread running about hoods and the buffeting, so even on a sunny day you could have the roof off, screen down, maybe less wind noise, more exhaust noise and a proper view out of the rear view mirror, and if we are splitting hairs the marginally better protection of the hoop up instead of down, (not that significant I guess)

In your message you mentioned a "zip out window" I had in mind just having the zip on the sides and the top edge, but completely removable would work too I guess, maybe a bit trickier to do but handy for renewing if the window goes dull

To be honest either or, I'm not too worried. I would be very interested to know if it is possible/ worth it.

Cheers

Sorry guys, I just can't believe you're contemplating putting a zip in the back window! Each to their own I suppose!

Hi Andy

The zip-out screen used to be popular on the old MG's, TR's, and Healey's. The rear screen on my old Midget could be unzipped down the sides and along the top so you could lay it flat inside the car befor dropping the hood. No creases at all...

Zips stick and break - velcro would be better as long the thieves didn't know.

Hi Paul,

Point taken, just can't picture it on the Chimaera...

MX5's all have this. Window is attached on the lower edge, but zipped along the sides and top. You unzip the plastic and lay flat on the parcel shelf before dropping the hood. Seems like a sensible mod for the CHim have to keep an eye on this thread. There was also a company doing glass replacement windows for MX5's , again they just zip out onto the parcel shelf. I cant see this working in a chim unless the window size was reduced to make it flat and avoid the curves at each end.

Oh and I just remembered the zip had a piece of material overlapping it on the outside to keep things watertight

Just a thought.....

I had a Spitfire with the zipped rear screen - it really would be worth it - run zip from just inside the stays on bottom edge to leave hinge and whole screen could tuck inside, as said would never see a crease. Imagine roof could fold flatter too. Only problem is the 'over-flap' to keep out water would work wrong way on bottom corners to zip in far enough to get round stays - haven't thought that far....

I discussed this as a possibility with the trimmer that did my hood. His concern was that the rear screen is under tension against the overcentre aluminium roof stays - keeping the stays in position. He feared this tension would pull the zip apart, hence he advised against.

A little trick in the meantime is to use some clear silicone sealant to glue the screen back in place. The advantage of this over glue is that the sealant peels away easily with little or no residue when the time comes to do the job properly.

Hi guys,
I've got a small amount of damage to the edge of the hood on my Chim and have asked a sailmaker if he can put some edging tape on to stop the fraying on the back edge of the targa. No problem and reasonably cheap, but needs me to remove the targa so he can put it through the industrial sewing machine.

He reckons the hard part will be to re-install the canvas as getting it streatched taught might be a problem. Has anyone had any experience of this and how easy/difficult is it to do?
