I have seen a car that I would like to turn into a track day car. If I was to buy it and park it off the road while I work on it, I could put a Statutory Off Road Notification on it. My question is am I able to drive it to and from a garage if im having work done, like say having a roll cage fitted.
Im not sure how it works if you have a car on a SORN and need to take it to an MOT station, ie you cant get tax without an MOT and cant get a tax unless you have an MOT.

Quite correct Sparky, you can drive it to and from a pre-arranged MoT test only - anything else will get you in deep doo-doos.

So how are you supposed to get a car to a garage to have work done in order to pass an MOT to buy tax. I suppose I could just book an MOT everytime it goes to have work done, be cheaper than buying tax
I have just found out the car is in Newcastle so might be a bit to far to go and have a look
If a large amount of work is required one might reasonably expect the garage to collect it either with a trailer or on trade plates. For a small amount of work you just book an MoT and take it there just the once, instructing the garage to do the work necessary for it to pass the Mot, do the MoT as well and then you collect it, receive the MoT and can immediately tax it as the MoT pass will be on the DVLA computer.
Anyway, if it is to be a track car, it might be anticipated that you'll have your own trailer or access to one. My neighbour, who has a Caterham, borrows my trailer quite regularly to move his track car around.

The official exemptions are to/from a statutory test and to/from a place of rectification AFTER a failure. I'm not sure whether you can return home after a failure and then drive to a garage on a subsequent day, but I think so.
The legislation doesn't mentioned that a test must be pre-booked, but I suspect there is case law which makes it essential.
