Hi
My starter spins every time but only 'catches' about half the time.
Its been doing this the past week. Prior to that it was absolutely fine.
Whats this indicating? - if its on its way out, it would be handy to know
so I can call the AA at the 'appropriate' time!!!
(I've got the repair cover)
Thanks

s'what I figured - hence the question - I was going to try and time it just right so it won't suddenly spark back to life!
I reckon they'll only try it a couple of times.
It would help if it was more/less likely to fail according to temperature - but there doesnt seem to be a pattern to it.
Reckon I'll just chance it not too far from home on the day I want to get it recovered!!

Best of luck, ours went in the garage, had to tow it out sideways and ended up with a split tyre as well as the car going off on a low loader. They're very unpredictable, didn't think ours would start a couple of times but it did, then on then day it was due to go to the garage, it wouldn't start. Sods law
Now its having a second refurb in 6 month, no warning it just went, thankfully it was at the garage this time when it went, having just had its service.

So, what car did you eventually get? Your profile still says 4.5 Chim'.
As for the starter, bite the bullit and send it off to Eurolec to get it refibished. I'm not sure that I would trust the AA not to put a Nissan Maxima one in, and hey presto you have problems again in a couple of months.
It's not bad getting it out, only took 30mins maximum.

I got a Cerb
No seriously - I got a 4.2 97, (2 door hardtop
) - I decided to scratch the itch - "you only live once" etc etc!
I didnt realise the starter was a potential 'roadside' - thats handy to know - but most AA don't take much persuasion to revert to low loader in my experience. Either way I'm going to have to chance it - and get it somewhere where I can put a decent one on it. I think the outgoing has done about 3 years - not bad I guess!!!
Cheers Tim - maybe see you at a get together sometime!

You really only need a couple of spanners and a screwdriver, oh, and the odd allen key.
You don't need a garage to do it, just, as I've said, about half an our to remove and about the same to put the new one in.
But do bare in mind that you will need to send yours off to be referbed' so the car may be immobile for a few days.
There is a guy on eBay selling starters outright for £270, but i know of at least one PHeaded who's not very happy with his starter, as it went 't*ts up' after just a few days. www.eurolec-components.com are the people TVR now use, so I'm told. Eurolec want £160 to recon your unit.
Tim
PS: less of the sarchasm, not sure I've forgiven you for the 'talking to the wrong people' comment in one of your previous postings.

mines was doing the exact same, i took the starter out after it just wouldnt start, sent it was and the place said...'err yir starters fine mate' but said the conection between the solenoid and the starter bit itself was needing cleaned up a bit. When i fitted it that day it started first time and has started no bother for the next 9 or 10 times ive been out in it, when it was off i cleaned up some of the wires left on the car and planning to do the earths on friday
Cheers Guys - sounds like i need to make a couple of checks before I write it off. (and potentially call the AA)
Ballsy - was your starter spinning though or just dead?
Will get on the case this weekend.
Tim - I guess its fairly straightforward? I get the impression your 'half hour jobs' might be my 'nightmare half day'!!!

how did you do it in half an hour, did you get it out without removing anything else.
i removed fuel rail, throttle linkage, top cover and big fuse carrier which in turn had stripped its grab bolts(real name anybody) which led to removal of coil packs and coil pack mounting plate which already had 3 of these grab bolts missing which i had to replace at work the next day.
i love these half hour jobs.
to make matters worse when i re-assembled it all i found a crack on the weld on my exaust manifold.....and it rained.....and it was cold......but i enjoyed it

Odd you mention about the loose wires.
Mine has the same issue, spins without catching at times and makes that horrible screeeeeh.
However, mine is absolutely spot on when warm. Now, assuming that connections may become tighter as things get warm etc perhaps this is what my car suffers from.... Hmmmm

Nope, only took me half an hour to take the bugger out. Bit longer to put it back in as I re-wrapped 3 hoses with heat wrap, but not a lot longer.
Yes, I removed the fuel rail, and cut several cable ties to release various hoses and the only thing I broke was the tail for the barometric pressure sensor of the NS airbox.
