Storing a cat?
Discussion
In a basket? No, seriously... I need to store a cat for future fitting (if only for MOT time) and want it still to be functioning obviously. Somewhere dry 9 the loft?)and with the openings covered with bags or similar? I guess condensation, spiders and dust are the most likely contaminants.

You should be able to get through an MOT without one.

How Kim? The car is completely catless now... I have heard fables of 'lean' running being induced just for the emissions test but had largely dismissed these. The only other option is for the probe to accidently end up in the wrong tail pipe
Would love to know how to get it through without having to go through this rigmerole (worth it though it will be)

I have no cats or baffles in mine, and it has passed two MOT's since being modified without hassle. I think that most people who have had this done get through okay.

At a recent MOT the tester showed me the manufacturer's idle CO and HC emissions levels - these are the levels used in the test. Manufacturers who do not supply information (among them TVR) are subject to default emissions levels at a more relaxed level than most maufacturer data. At a guess your decatted cars are either being tested (perhaps wrongly - I don't know) against non-cat default data, or are passing against default catted data, because they're in good running order and the default levels are relatively relaxed.

Hmmm... that's intersting. Worth asking my local MOT station to do a dry run do you think, just to see how it would fare?

What performance differance is there? I have pre cats out and will ditch the big one if it is worth the hassle.
Seems performance neutral so far in terms of go, although it does seem to rev a bit more freely (may be psychological). In terms of making jaws drop, scaring kittens and creating a never ending repertoire of pops crackles and bloody great bangs, it's no contest.
Joking aside, I had the Offords cherry bomb conversion done (a pair of cherry bomb 'silencers' welded into the standard back box) some time ago and, with the cats, it was only a little louder than stock although a touch deeper... it is now dramatic and prolly too loud TBH ('though I'm going to live with it for a while). I suspect I will either end up opening the box again and reintroducing some perf pipes/wadding to supplement/replace the cherry bombs (depending on what I find in there) or just bite the bullet (again) and shell out for a stainless ACT/JP silencer system... the main cat seems to be the principal silencing component in the standard set up (unless mine was just blocked) so I'm guessing a full length absorbtion tube silencer will still sound plenty fruity without cats (whilst preserving the crackles, which are delightful). Any experience of going these routes anyone? Want to keep the volume sane-ish whilst retaining the character.
