A strange one. Only the left channel is working on my pc. It appears to be a sound card issue, cirumventing the speakers produces the same results.

Xp Home SP2 Pentium 4
Yamaha ac-xg sound card (with up to date driver)

I opened her up to find that the sound card looks integrated with the motherboard. The first thing I thought of was just to buy another sound card, but will this solve it?

The only thing I can remember doing recently that might have affected it, was removing a cable that used to serve the (long removed) minidisc deck.

thanks in advance.

have you checked the sound balance in the sound properties (the speaker next to the clock). It might be you've simply switched the channel off.

Is the jack seated correctly?

What about the cable? Wire may be broken...

Which cable? I've ruled out the possibility of faulty speaker / cable by putting working headphones directly into the soundcard.

Woops, missed that part...

I guess you are looking at and add in card, then. I would attempt to disable the on-board audio FIRST before I add the new card. Most modern systems allow you to do that in the BIOS. If not, there is usually a jumper on the motherboard.

My add in cards of choice have always been soundblasters. Good value for money and most of their current crop have a good digital audio out option.

What about external ones, are they any cop? I think I've run out of PCI slots, although I could free one up by removing the wifi card.

I would be more apt to put the soundcard inside and use a USB dongle for wifi. Soundcards just seem to function better as a pci add-in. All of the wifi/usb things that I have tested have no issue being external...
