I know nowt about t'internet (and not much about owt else)

What's this do?:

It says a certain website, when you revisit it, that you've been there before. It's a 'cookie' and Pistonheads, for example, uses them too. It's nothing really to woory about, even if it's from an advertising site. Adaware shows them up, just to show anything up, so its users think adaware is busy and powerful

It's a cookie placed on your PC by an ad server. It can be used to record the fact that you've seen a particular advert (and prevent you seeing it more than 'n' times in a day), or potentially for the ad server to track the fact that you've seen an ad on PH and on another site served by the same company.

It does not identify you personally.

or just wipe all advert and tracking cookies that you dont recognise

I wipe 'em all (I think). I ran adaware, zapped everything, then logged on PH & got the above. I was just curious as to what it did.

Think of it as a bit of paper with some numbers written on it. More information can be written onto the paper and it can read from too. However the information written on it is only written on by the server, it can't gather any information from your PC. It does not have access to your PC other than permission to store the 'note'.
