Growl route help required

I'm trying to map out the routes but the downloadable maps are poor quality. Anyone got any ideas on the best way to do this?
Obviously want to plot the route on the map and add some text, ie pubs etc to eat if anyone wnat to stop.

have u tried google earth and clicked the road box?

Can only think prehaps copy the map into a image editer photoshop etc and add the info in text boxes then. long winded but once its done once you can print a load off.
