Parr Performance Engine Mapping

Ok, it sounds like your MAF sensor is dirty ( the “Hot Wire” which plugs in between the air box & throttle housing ) , the only real way to cure it is to replace it, these cost around £2-250.00 fitted. They clog up and create a flat spot on all 996 & Boxster models around 4,000rpm.
In my experience the foam type filters can add to the problem as they are coated in something which sticks to the hot wire, I use a BMC cotton based filter in mine.
hope this helps

where would you recommend I go for this, since i read that OPC like to charge for 1-2 hours labour for what is basically a plug-out-in job.
The chances of you not damaging the incredibly fine and closely calibrated wire by poking around with a cotton bud are very very small indeed, I'm the first to reccomend this technique with a throttle potentiometer but not MAF sensor unless its a flapper type.
If you want to clean it try a bit of brake/carb cleaner and a bit of compressed air, but again be careful the air doesnt damage the wire.

Before you visit the OPC, give the MAF a good clean with electronics cleaner (Isopropyl Alcohol) and a cotton bud. Make sure you disconnect the battery for 10 minutes - it takes me that long to get the airbox off and to start cleaning the MAF.
Wot he said but forget the cotton bud. And I never bothered to disconnect the battery...

Thought the BMC filter (like the K&N) rely on cotton soaked in oil, too much of which is the main cause of fouled wire??

Im not sure if its the fuel...doesnt seem to like tesco 99, or if it just needs re-tuning/mapping.

I can attest that my Mk1 also doesn't like Tesco's Finest 99. Engine feels sluggish, but torque feels stronger at the bottom end. No scientific tests, just seat of the pants. Oh, and Tesco savings negate themselves as I rarely get better than 200 miles to a tank on Tescos vs. regular 275miles on Optimax or Ultimate.

Crikey Adrien, thats a big difference in fuel consumption - not that thats a great issue with these cars but if it was similar driving situations, I'll not try Tsco fuel!
cheers
Ajit.
PS - hope the rest of the road trip was good

The drive up north to Holland and Amsterdam was brilliant. Weather finally cleared out, and it was a bit comical trying to negotiate those Amsterdam roads without grounding out all the time! I can recommend the Radisson in Amsterdam as the hotel is well located and it has a secure car park.
Not sure what the situation is with Tescos... initially the price of their 99 was several pence cheaper than Optimax/Ultimate, but it seems the price has recently reached parity. It must be the higher content of bioethanol in the Tesco mixture - the increased torque is welcome at low speed, but I think it's poor VFM considering the mileage...

you know...thinking about it the mileage on the last few tesco fills wasnt that good..I think I will avoid and stick to optimax/ bp super.
