I've had major problems recently with my car stalling and running very badly intermittently. Turns out that when the AA recently jump started car they wedged the ECU on top of the battery right under the very hot cooling pipes! Not the ideal location. Now moved it to the side of the battery and car is much, much better. In the last week problem has only occured once. If problem continues do you think ECU could have suffered permanent damage?

Don't know what happened to yours, but electronic heat damage does tend to be permanent.

I had exactly the same thing 2 years ago Chris. I moved the ECU and the problem has never occured since, hopefully yours will be the same.

Thanks David. Unfortunately it has happened once since I moved it, but hopefully it has now rectified itself. Time will tell...

I suspect it's more likely to do with the fact that the ecu multi plug and wires are now oriented differently, rather than heat. For example with the ecu on top of the battery the plug/wires may have been under stress causing an intermittent connection or something. With the ecu next to battery the wiring is more comfortable.
