Took PAT to Custom Chrome in Nuneaton yesterday to sort out my decat.

Pat my 4.2 Cerb was fitted with a single twin cat together with bigger bore performace exhaust system long before I bought the car - it all sounded very nice 106db @ 4000rpm etc however for those that are familure the cat glowing red hot 2 inches from me bum was a bit off putting!

Pete at Custom Chrome made up a pair of long thin silencers to get the noise down a bit, the sound is now more mellow and very nice - noise levels are now down to a more manageable 95db

I am not sure if it is just me but the car seems to have a bit more power - which is great!

The only real problem that we encountered was the braceing panel to the underside will now not fit (only just) with the new silencers, does anyone know if this is essential to the rigidity to the underside of the car, I guess I will have to make up some bracing bars if nessesary!

Hoping to go to Goodwood tomorrow - CU there perhaps!
J.

I think its just there to protect the cats. I cant see any reason why you cant run with out it as you have the cats removed.

Just had mine looked at last week by APM and he noticed I did not have a Chassis closing plate which he says adds stability to the chassis, I will probably look to get one put back on at some stage..

plus they're absolutely essential for chassis rigidity (something the cerbera doesn't have a great deal of to start with ..) .. surprised you guy without them haven't cracked your screens yet with the flexing ..

Has anyone ever looked to increase the Cerbs rigidity?? (like attaching the rear of the cage to the chassis? (surely a massive improvement to be had there? - not sure whats involved though!)

Heres a photo of the silencers fitted to PAT binging him down to a more sociably acceptable level for track events.

Chassis bracing panel now refitted just in case the windows crack / pop out!

Yep, have ACT's in-line silencers on mine and they sound lovely, giving a much deeper note. My car comes up at 106dB with the in-line silencers and ACT rear sports pipes.

Not sure I'd be too happy at that setup. As far as I can see the only two things holding the WHOLE weight of that exhaust is a manifold at one end and two sqiddly little rubber mounts under the back box.

I have to tell you know I rekon you are heading for disaster. Those rubber mounts under the back box are a perishable item. Often one has gone or close to and one of the most common things cerb owners ask to borrow my ramp for.

If one were to go you may not feel it. If two were to go the whole weight of that system would hit the ground and the only thing stopping it would be the manifold bolts.

I'm surprised an exhaust place would let you have it like that. So please tell me there's a special bracket there I can't see.

Julian,

That is the same as mine, and mine didn't have any other mounts when the original was removed.

Don't forget that the brace goes under the exhaust and isn't going to let the system drop very far is the worst happens.

Where is yours supported?

You have given me food for thought, may have to pop up and put my car on your ramp.

Ahh, you're right, I've read that the brace is there for a degree of ridgidity, but assumed that the photo had been taken when work was in progress, but guess I was wrong:

The only real problem that we encountered was the braceing panel to the underside will now not fit (only just) with the new silencers, does anyone know if this is essential to the rigidity to the underside of the car, I guess I will have to make up some bracing bars if nessesary!

I had to modify my brace slightly so that the flanges didn't catch, it was a case of an angle grinder and about 4" of material removed.

My exhaust hangs to one side so really must get under the car and sort it, also want to tuck the exhaust up more neatly, so would love to take you up on your offer of ramp when it suits.

If its any help, Most cerbs have very thick spacing washers for the back two of the brace, and some seem to have the washers back four.

Now in your situation I would make a set of spacing washers all the way down the brace that would allow fitting, and then tack weld each washer into place on your brace to improve the rigidity.

But you should still have to make a bracket from the brace to support those pipes somewhere.

In your situation I'd be busy with my mig welder.

Mine has spacers under all of the fixings. Oh and thanks, you've just reminded me that my MiG fried itself last time I used it.
