This has bound to have been asked before but my doors catch the back of the front wings when I open/close them. Is there a simple fix? If not, is there a complicated one?

The fix is relatively simple in concept - the hinges need adjusting - however this can be a pig of a job if you've not done it before.

I've noticed that when the hinges have been adjusted to stop the door 'dropping' many cars have this problem, my nearside door is just catching.

If you want to do it yourself there is a thread on here with details (search on hinges) which will help and LeeBee had posted some pictures showing the hinge assembly. Once the interior door panel has come off you can get to the bolts (the smaller ones either side of the big central bolt) with a socket set.

I haven't done mine yet - its a job for the spring or for paying someone to do.

Cheers,
JSG.

My understanding of the situation is that if the doors have dropped or have play in them then it is because the bush in the hinge is worn allowing movement in the hinge. I'm guessing that if there is play then any future rate of wear in the bush will be higher. If you adjust the hinge then it will only be a matter of time before you will need to adjust it again as the bolt will not be parallel in the other hinge bit as the bush has worn and you'll now be only using the two opposite edges of the bush (if you see what I mean).

The solution would be to rebush the hinge. The danger of the situation is that if the door hinges are rusty and you attempt to undo the top bolt the captive nut in the sill will rotate and there's no way of stopping it rotating as you can't get a spanner to it.

I'm not afraid of doing stuff to my car (having taken out the engine and gearbox last year to get the gearbox reconditioned) but this job I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. Instead LeeBee did the job for me and, incidentally, did a very good job of it too (even though one of my captive nuts broke free and started spinning).

Good luck,

Mark
