Knee down is over-rated.

And not one knee stuck out or down once...

It's not necessary, but it's fun and gives you more confidence, IMHO.

good on you , as an owner of an 06 fireblade and having had a few goes on a Thunderace im impressed, you must be a really good rider,, either that or he was 1 of the types who just likes to do wheelies and has no idea of what his bike is actully capable of, i feel sorry for his Fireblade.

sounds painful mate, i remember having a cut on my knee when i came off my R1 and because your knee is always bending it was a right pain healing up, sorry im sure you didnt need to know that, but hope it heals up quick.

Well done, getting my knee down might not be necessary but it shows I am leaning further - provides a good measure of how far you're over on the bike as well... Lots of riders refer to certain corners as "knee down corners"...

Doesn't necessarily mean that you are leaning further, it may mean that you're hanging off the bike further.
I got right over to the edges of my tyre at Donington last year, never stuck my knee out or down once.

Like I said, its over-rated.

Surely getting you're knee down has other implications which are useful, other than looking good.

1st, Balance. You could balance the bike on your knee & various people have recovered bad situation for bouncing the bike back up with the knee.

2nd, weight distribution. Hanging you're knee out make you turn in easier as the weight is in the right area.

3rd, braking. Having youre knee hanging out before you enter a corner actually helps slow you down, ala ships sail (drag).

Have you lot never read a 'twist of the wrist'

I agree that knee down is pretty pointless on the road. I'm sure most people can make plenty of progress without resorting to GP impressions on the road. On a track thats a different situation...

Round here we get plenty of weekend warriors trying to get their knee's down on the local roundabout. Makes me laugh cos knees go down but the bikes are, on the main, so upright... There are some genuinely quick people mind you, but blitzing a pretty blind roundabout is, in my view, irresponsible and doesnt leave much room for error!

I've always understood that the knee has almost opposite uses for road riders and racers - For us mere mortals getting the knee down is a symbol of schievement of how far we have managed to lean, where for the racers it is a guage to stop them cranking over any farther and running out of rubber. So I guess Racefan is right that you can keep your knee tucked in to the bike and get over even farther, but you need to be a pretty good judge of when the grip is about to run out if you don't have a knee or a bit of the bike to tell you.
