does anyone have or used to own a TL1000R?
Discussion
hi, my brother is considering one of these as his first bike, and going on to do his test, hes ridden mine a few times before but has found all of mine too uncomfortable as he is a rather large chap, just wondering what the TL1000R is like comfort wise and rider wise as he still wants a sporty bike but with a little more comfort and £3500 will get you a decent one of these.
Well stone the crows!!
I've a TLR as we speak.
As some of you guys will know (or if you read my profile) i've had a few bikes in my time so can judge pretty well what its like.
Mine is well modified: Full M4 System, TLS Cams, High Comp Pistons, Hyperpro Rear shock, Gixxer Thou front forks n brakes etc etc.
Anyway, i love my TL. Its got loads of grunt and even a standard one handles with good stability cause of the Big Beam Frame.
Its quite a big bike physically compared with a 2006 Fireblade or Gixxer 1000 but i kinda like that trait. The riding position is quite 'Bum-up, weight forward on wrists' not unlike an SP2 etc.
The only slight downside for me is its quite thirsty (early 30's mpg) but mine is set for alot of power (135+bhp at the Wheel)
Obviously mine has had alot done to it but there is a forum (TLZone) which is a big ol community for TL owners and will give you lots of info.
I Hope that helps and if you need any more info drop me a line.
cheers,
Nick

Nope but I've heard they're rubbish. Good in a straight line only. Crap suspension too.
its not he sort of bike i would buy as they dont look the most nimble of things but comfort is a big factor for him, and e doesnt really want a sports tourer, ive told im to get the RSV but mainly so i can ride it too
nick thanks for your input its been very helpful, does the front end of a GSXR 1000 just go straight on if you use the yokes too?

First bike?! Are you sure about this? New rider on a 120bhp bike capable of 160+mph? Errr... Heeellloooooo
btw I rode one for 40,000 miles. Lovely. Brilliant engine, stable chassis, . Fling the rotary damper into the nearest hedge. Fit a proper shock. Take off the steering damper - locate next to rotary damper in hedge. Fit a 180 rear tyre. Enjoy

its not like he cant ride though, he used to have motocrossers a few years ago and has had a fair few goes on every sportsbike i have owned, in honesty i cant see him having trouble handling it, that and when he does ride he rides.....well rather catiously is the best and least offensive expression i can think of.
My first bike was a TLS and I thought it was fantastic! Not quite the same as the TLR I know, but can't be that different. I took it easy for the first few months then gradually opened up the throttle more. It was a bit of a boat, but was comfortable and the easy torque made it great to ride smoothly - no frantic revving or gear changes, just plenty of low-down easy power. It was a great first bike for me and I still miss that engine and sound! Best advise is always to try out several bikes before buying. Everone's opinions are different and it's all down to you (your brother) and ability, self-control, experience, cost, preferences, etc.
I have ridden all sorts of bikes over the years.
The one I still ride that has me grinning from ear to ear is the TLR and have done for 7 years.
A bit heavy on the wrists though for a first bike and as previously reported a bit bum up.
I have ridden an RSV mille and found that a little more smoother.
TLRs are better than the reputation they enjoy.

To be honest i'm not sure as the previous owner did the work (and spent the money!)
I'll be speaking to him in the next week or so and i'll ask what work was necessary for the Gixxer forks to be fitted..

Gotta agree there.. I hadn't even considered a TLR when i bought mine but after someone recommending one to me and going to see one etc it was just what i wanted.
In Yellow with a high level exhaust system i think they look great. I'm amazed how much attention mine gets considering its a 1999 bike.
