Hi, a friend if mine is having loads of trouble with his router, all his connections are slow and keep breaking up. I've put this down to him maybe having the wrong type of router. His is a points router????? by linksy and i think he needs a broadband one like i've got? is this true?? also he's got a 2 meg connection but he can only find 1 meg routers, does anyone know where he can get one to match his connection speed (ps its with ntl) . Cheers for any help please keep it as simple as possible as i am to. Oh and he's running two pc's and a xbox360 ta!!!

NTL (cable) broadband is different to POTS (normal phone line) broadband.
If his router works and is the one supplied with his connection, I would leave it well alone.
I've not had much experience of cable broadband, but there should be no reason
for it to drop out. Get him to phone up NTL as they should be able to troubleshoot it over the phone.

He has cable broadband not phone line.. the router is one he brought of his own back. What makes me wonder is that mine actually says broadband router on the top of it and his doesnt.

I installed a Linksys cable router in my daughter's student house on NTL broadband 2 yrs ago and it works fine. 4 of them are using it wirelessly and 2 wired.
I think it's a Linksys WRT54G.
The NTL service is a bit iffy, though. It has weeks where it will come and go all the time.

Something here might help:
