993 oil burn - what is normal?

Burning oil – they all do…
Still early days for me with my new 993 i.e. only 6 weeks so I’m still building familiarity with its many quirks. And on this, I have an impression ( not exactly science yet) that I am burning a lot more oil that I would expect. I am told they burn oil and this can vary a great deal depending on car, age, miles, driving style, oil being used, how it is parked?, etc. Hard to tell for sure as have only done 600 miles to date ( I am now well versed in the correct stick reading regime so this is not the variable). I have just done 2 200+ miles runs in past week ( note the sun arrived at last). First nearly all motorway and easy driving – checked oil before and after and used no oil. Did a spirited 200 mile A road journey yesterday and seems to me that oil has dropped 1” on the stick which I guess would be ¼ of a litre. Is this normal or should I start worrying. Car has only 48k miles, full OPC record, drives very well, no smoke at start up and no oil on garage floor when left, running Mobile 1. Do get a slight oily smell when run hard as yesterday once I stopped and went to do my dipstick thing.
I have read forum comments which seem to indicate large variations is oil use and even figures of 1ltr per 1k miles as being not unusual and nothing to worry about.
Any informed experience/feedback welcome – good or bad.

My 993 turbo uses a bit of oil - more so if driven hard. The consumption that you describe does not sound in any way excessive, and the fact that the car is not a smoker or a dripper suggests to me that all is well. The hot oil smell is also a normal part of air-cooled (oil-cooled really!) porker life and nothing to worry about. I hope that you're enjoying the car - apart from periodic front geometry set ups mine has so far brought me great pleasure!
One minor word of advice - don't know what grade Mobil 1 is in your engine, but try to avoid the 0W-40 as it is a bit thin for the 993s. I use the 5W-40 following a 0W-40 leak-finder experience! Note that the thinner oil would theoretically burn off a bit faster too as more likely to get past the scraper rings on the pistons.

For normal use, 1l/1000 miles would be time for a top end rebuild assuming it was piston rings or valve stem seals.
However, as has been said, that super thin Mobil 1 will exagerate the issue, a good 10w-40 synthetic will be fine for a normal n/a 993 (993tt is a little different).
Don't worry, just keep an eye on it. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about from your description.

Guys, thanks for feedback. Still early days for me and I'm still finding my way. The spirited drive yesterday was my first real chance to push the car proper for first time. Hampshire back to Sevenoaks via A31 and A25. Have driven these roads many many times in a past life in normal/boring cars - hating all those roundabouts, bends and traffic lights. Yesterday was great and car just impressed me so much more - BIG smile for 2 hours. What price that eh ( hopefully not price din points!!) Roadholding on what was effectively a summers day was just amazing and the engine note above 5k revs. Well the thing of hairs standing - back of the neck and and a wet back and sweaty palms when home.. I know a simple man, new to the scene - but was good...VERY good.
Appreciate I'm probably being a tad paranoid on oil front. Oil I believe is Mobil 1 0-40 and I have already decided to go Silkolene route on forum feedback as this would seem to be best if price is not a concern.

I have had many issues with mobile one, in particular quite heavy oil usage and my engine builder refuses to use it!
Switch to a better quality pao ester grade V oil at say 5/40 and its a far better choice than the mobil.
Also, interestingly, it was found that parts with a high pad pressure (ie cam lobes ect) seem to wear more with mobil one in testing seshions than a good semi synthetic.
