Ok Im putting a public access kiosk together. normally we use a windows box, with I.e in kiosk mode and various other bits to lock the o/s down. but there must be a way to do somthing similar with a linux type o/s and a decent browser I know firefos has a kiosk extension but i've not used it.

ideally what i'd like to do is get the machine to boot straight to linux and load the locked down browser with a preset homepage, and not be able to do any thing else. so at the end of the day the box is just turned off and on again at the start of the next as needed, or just left running...

any Ideas

We use these. Load up and go to a copy of IE. They can't do anything else because it won't do anything else (Apart from Citrix/RDP stuff). Doesn't need any back end stuff but can be managed centrally if you want.

I've never done a kiosk setup, but I'd look to do it with KDE first because it comes with all the gui config tools and precoded kiosk profiles probably too. here or there

Otherwise, I'd create a user with no rights other than web surfing, setup autologin, preset to Windowmaker (or some other lean desktop environment), disable all the keyboard shortcuts in order to prevent closing the browser. A script shall start Firefox or Mozilla in Kiosk mode (from an extension) on startup of the desktop.
