driving up the M40 the other day at slightly above the NSL in lane 1
land rover defender in lane 2 easing past me
merc clk about 8 car lengths in front of defender, just pulling away from him

we all see police car parked up about 200-300 yards ahead at roadside in a layby, apply stoppers to back under NSL

i pass car and see that copper is stood in open doorway pointing a device down the road. its 6-8 inch rectangular box with what looked like two lenses on it. he looked down into the car as we passed him

anyone know if its a speed gun or a video camera? he didn't give chase so i'm assuming its a video.
also, anyone know if the video is is likely to have caught all three of us or whether it would just have been one (in which case i hope it was the Merc!!!)

It sounds to me like you had a ‘vanilla’ LTI2020 pointed at you.

Do any of the following look like the unit?

This is the LTI without the video camera attachment:

This is the LTI with a video camera attachment:

This is the LTI with a video camera attachment and a zoom lens:

Given that the prosecution threshold is usually 10%+2 (78mph in your case) and your speedo will likely be overreading by around 5%, I would say your being slightly over the limit should be OK. Time will tell

I understand from a colleague that yesterday the police were operating their hairdryers from a bridge down at the bottom of the M40. They were crouched down, positioned behind posts and aiming through the railings. While that goes against the "guidelines", so what if a few "motorists" (boo, hiss) were done?

Yes. I've seen police using this tactic on the M40...actually lying prone on a bridge over the motorway and 'sniping' through the railings.

looks like i'm in the clear as no NIP received 4 weeks after incident and if i'm not mistaken they have to be sent to reg keeper within 2 weeks of the offence....
