Hi, new to the forum, i am just looking at chims at the moment. Found a good 5 litre HC model that had an engine rebuild 6k ago and it has 50k on the clock. Are these engines strong or should i stay clear from the HC? Is there anything I should look out for on this one?

Hi, Welcome to Pistonheads!

I can't comment on the HC but I have a 500 and it's awesome! All of the V8s are pretty solid, however I'd be interested to know why that one was rebuilt.

There's a buyer's guide here. Basically, condition is everything.

Theyre excellent if you get a looked after one,i had one as my first TVR.Theres no difference between the HC and non HC models in the 500's though,so don't worry about the HC bit.Reliability,as with all RV8 models,is good,so long as its been looked after.Enjoy

Was just going to say that.. all the 500's are HC. I trust the seller isn't "bigging up" the HC bit

Cheers,
Matt.

Sandy - Get a 5.0, they're the best... especially red ones.

i am drivin a p reg 500 with 2500 miles on a full rebuild ( 75k on car ). Rock solid. Local specialist says it will take another 5 thou or so for the engine to realy 'loosen up'.

Cheers for all the help guys. The guy just said 5 litre but the engine had hc written on it. It is F***ing fast. Got a good feeling about it but going to take it for a half hour drive and then get it up on a 4 poster before buying it. But as long as it looks ok underneath, it is mine
Look forward to spending more time on the forum as i am currently on a porsche forum but am selling the porker!

cheers

When out test driving ones before settling on the 4L the first one I tried was a 5L and it felt like a punch in the guts when pushed hard.

Dont forget a sorted 4.5 or even some 4.0 will easily match the power of a "normal"/"average" 5.0. Obviously a sorted 5.0 will be higher again so if you buy a decent 5.0....

Either way a large grin will be pasted.

My 4.5 has recorded figures regarded as "strong for a 5.0"... (on three different rolling roads)

a lowish power 500 will generall alway be above a good 450 as the 500 has the extra cc's and the only one of the 3 engine option with the ported heads as std. Only way to go.
