Similar problem here - Asus A8N32 board with no sound out of the back ports, but the headphones port on the case works, so I know I've wired that up right!
Using the in-built speaker of the wee lad's LCD TV with a 3.5mm stereo jack.
Possibly the ports at the rear are kaput?
Have tried many, but not all (as the rest make no sense to use) permutations for the OS and Asus's own util to get sound out. Puzzled to feck if it's not faulty HW.

Ah the old front port rear port thing...If the front ports are in use, quite often the rear ports are shut off automatically. It's all done electrically so you can't change that option. I wired my brothers pc wrong, and his front ports work, but the rear ports won't, I had to change the wiring and then it all worked. Try re-wiring again!
Rich, from memory, goto control panel - system - third tab (I think) - device manager. Then somwhere at the top is a button marked search for new hardware. When in device manager, it might show the sound card with some sort of icon on it, double clicking the icon will tell you if there is a problem with the device. It may just need re-enabling. If theres some sort of error code attached to it, right click the icon, hit uninstall and reboot. That might just fix whatever is wrong with it. If there is no sound card icon, scan for new hardware. If still not showing then it's either shafted or not physically there anymore! Could just be xp being an off day, sound card might show up next week (did that to me once).

Ah, so you're saying the fact I've connected the loose wires to the board's audio connectors, means sound is being routed that way - and if I disconnect them, the sound will magically re-appear on the rear ports.
Is this true also for the USB or is that a different kettle of fish.
Finally, (sorry to sort of hijack the thread), does the board need to support an all-in-one floppy/memory card reader or what do I do with the flying lead on the unit? Power and floppy are connected fine enough - just don't know what to do with the lead, which has a slim connector, but no corresponding part on the board.
Is there some sort of adapter lead I need which can piggy-back one of the USB connections on the board?
Cheers guys.
I've no idea about the slim connector - I'm guessing it may need an adapter though, how many wires is it? The front port thing, disabling rear sound when the front is enabled. It will only disable the rear if it detects a jack plugged into the front. No jack and it'll revert to rear. If not wired correctly (or its shafted
) for some reason it may always think the front jack is plugged in.

(in laymans terms so)
Boffins poked and prodded comooter about-
In the drivers area as suggested (ta), and found some missing (ta again)
went to HP site an retrieved them, which not only corrected that sound problem, but also
gave me sound on playback of recorded TV via 'power cinema' which has never worked
so for once a double whammy of good news
thanks for all suggestions as usual, wish I could have done it myself
but fear an explosion
