Ferrari V's Motorbike on Romsey Road?
Discussion
Was it anyone here that decide to have a wee race this evening, about 5.30?
Didn't get what the bike was, think it might have been a Kwak 750, Ferrari was a 360 I think, standard issue red. It was hard to tell, they weren't exactly standing still...
Have to say I was quite impressed, the ferrari kept up with the bike far better than I thought it would - sound was rather impressive, a racing bike and a Ferrari screaming their nuts off in each gear.
Probably not the safest of places to be doing that though, specially at that time of night...

Raced several bikes in the Gallardo (not on public roads of course!!)Off the line no car will keep with a serious bike (750cc+), but had an interesting 'do' with a Fireblade few weeks ago, 80-120MPH no difference at all, then I just started pulling away from him. Similar thing with a VTR 1000. How well I'd fare against something like a hyabusa or a ZX12 is yet to be seen.

You need to come over our way ...i'll take you out with some of the loons we know, bikers....as i'm sure you'll agree unlike the cars bikes are so rider dependant.
Agreed Gallardo drops most kit above 70 + but an r1 or equivalent with a proper rider can makes you look cheap.
One of the blokes we meet up with has the nickname "animal"....proper crazy!...think they have an in-balance..no fear!
Let me know a date when your free ..a sunday morning & i'll arrange.
You @ Le Mans?

it's an old debate, but my hayabusa would demolish my diablo on any road not too twisty, come the straights the bike will be dissapearing into the distance big style. busa 0 to 150 circa 10 secs, diablo/gallardo 0 to 100 circa 9 secs.
even at 150 and above the car would lose a drag race. ok the busa is one of the fastest but most 1000 superbikes are as quick or quicker nowadays.

I think you'd be surprised how quick your CBR would be up against a Supercar. Even a 600 wouldn't get caught until around 120mph by which time the car would be getting into it's stride. From a standing start a modern 1000cc sportsbike would cream my Gallardo, all way to the 186mph limiter (why the hell they limit bikes to 300kph is beyond me). A 'Busa or ZX12R would be ballistic. Anyone who has ridden any serious bikes knows it takes a lot more skill to ride a bike hard compared to a car, even in a straight line.
One of my all time heros is John Surtees, who famously said "Compared to racing a bike, racing a car is just a matter of stamping on the peddles and twiddling the steering wheel". Well put, John. Bikes rock!
you need a quick ride on a modern superbike. you'd be horrified. one hundred and eighty? no problem sir.
this topic will go on a while yet, fueled by superbike riders and non riding sportscar drivers, me thinks. oh well i've been here before.

I have had both fast cars and fast bikes. Make no mistake, a supercar is NOT as quick as a superbike. Not even close when it comes to acceleration. Top end will depend on if the vehicles are goverened, but most superbikes are quicker there too. On the twisty stuff a car will take a corner faster but the bike will have got there first and will out accelerate the car once round the corner. So given equal ability driver/rider the bike will win hands down. The big difference is that too ride a bike quickly is alot more difficult than to drive a car quickly.
Just had a quick search,
2005 Fireblade = 179kg overall ex rider. 170bhp = 0.95 bhp/kg
Gallardo se = 1469kg overall ex driver. 500bhp = (a paltry
) 0.34bhp/kg

I've raced some bikes and found they accelerate quick only if the road is smooth and straight. On a bendy road they had trouble putting the power down. They are also poor in braking, so a quick car will outbrake them. So, it depends on the road/circuit I'd say. I've beaten them in bendy roads and roundabouts, but been outaccelerated in straights.
Taking your figures incl a 83kg driver (me):
2005 Fireblade = 0.65 bhp/kg
Gallardo se = 0.32bhp/kg
So, the figures are still impressive for the bike, but less dramatic when including a rider. Then add the traction advantage of the 4WD Lambo, and the fat rubber, and you start to even out the acceleration, especially on non-optimal surfaces (wet, bumpy, or gritty), or a bend.

I have both and you have to define fast. The bike is brutal under acceleration but is harder to get off the line initially as fast as a car if the car driver is really trying. After that the bike is away. Remember any decent super bike will hit 60mph. in the low 3 seconds if the rider is any good(I am not), few cars can do that. Not withstanding grip that cars have bikes will pop monster wheelies if you are careless. I generally find with that with any respectable car we are both well illegal when he bike keeps pulling and the cars dont. Clutchless gear change on a bike is easy and very qick. I know you cant generalise because there will always be something faster be it car or bike.
I think this is an isoluble question. I love both bikes and cars and a play in either is fantastic fun. I say what ever you are in go for it and have a big grin.

I have "followed" a few bikes before in my 328, and whilst they stuff me in a straight line, I always make up a lot of ground going round the bends.
it's a matter of how much you are prepared to risk and how much of your safety margin you want to use up. on the road, if it goes wrong, biker can very easily die or be crippled, car can get a bit damaged
so, if you're going for a IoM trophy and you know exactly where the road is going, no-one is coming the other way etc, you might push a bit harder than if you're just trying to show up a driver of flash car, and even then, the risks are infinitely higher
and that's maybe why i'll be packing it in
