Had the exhaust innards on my Chim 500 removed. What a difference it's made. The fella that did it made a lovely job of it.... and all for £45 cash!

Do you mean the 'straight-through' pipes fitted in the silencer?

The guy who's done it will do my MOT as well. We discussed the noise issue and we agreed that all should be ok, so all seems fine on that front.
As far as the mod' is concerned (forgive my technical ignorance), but we have taken the simple approach. He has taken the cover panel of the silencer box, cut out an access panel and removed the fiber glass filler. Welded back up and put the cover panel back on. Looks a neat, infact you can't see anything has been done, but it's made a big difference to the noise.
Sounds fantastic, without really pi**ing of the neighbours and causing me problems with cat's on and off.

I'm a bit of a numpty on the technical side of things, so I deceided to keep it simple rather than taking on what I see as a big mod of cat removal and straight through pipes.
I am pleased with the results though.

While were on the subject can anyone tell me what size pipe is required to sleeve the silencer? Im looking at having a go at this over the weekend and i need to buy some pipe today!

Batleyboy, does your exhaust resonate now as you havnt had pipes welded inside the silencer??

Seen it referred to at 50mm, 55mm and 60mm OD... 55 is closest to the old 2.25 inch standard so my guess is it will be that. I'd be interested if anyone can confirm the dia of the standard perforated pipes that are always sleeved/removed... I may want to reinsert some in mjine since decatting (it is just a tad loud)!

Well its early days Jay Dee, but I think it does resonate a bit. It's hard to say as I'm listening for every thing now I've had it done. The trouble is getting a proper listen to it. At low rev's it sounds perfect and it's much louder than before. I have pushed it a bit in close confines, and I think it has a bit of a metalic sound. I am not sure if this is resonation or vibration (maybe the plate and the undersaide of the silecer vibrating).
I am goin to run it for a week or so, and I will then have a better idea of the final outcome.
If it's resonating a bit, I think that the solution maybe as you say, and weld pipes actually inside the silencer.
We will see....
I will take a bit of advice from the garage who I am working with, as they switched on and happy to oblige. If it needs to be done, it's only a £50 job, so it's I guess it's not an issue. But I don't honestly know what difference that will make. Maybe someone else has a comment to make?

Jay Dee.I think the welding has bust, therefore the reason for my previous email about it resonating was a bit of a red herring. Its back in the garage today and I will post an update later.

I have to say, it sounded great with just the silencing material out. Anything much louder and it wouldn't be manageable with the neighbours.
With a bit of luck, it will be in and out the garage later today, so I will post you then and let you know what the final result is.

Hey Jamie
All sorted. It was an issue with reverbaration. Sorted at no cost.
I have to say it has made a big difference. It sounds much louder, and it's not tinney in any way. It still rumbles like a good un, and it bangs and pops as before.
The only difference is that when you push it, you can hear a bit of a whistle coming through the pipes at the top end, but it sounds great. At low rev's the rumble is much deeper and more pronounced. In fact I got a couple of my mates to listen to it, and they were well impressed.
I think this is a good starting point if you are going to mod the exhaust. If your still after more, then I guess you can weld in a couple of through pipes and / or bash the cats out.
Cheers

Oh Dear. Yeh, mine whistles a little bit, but generally noise is louder. I am going to leave it a week or two and see how it goes.
